As someone who shares my life with dogs who are selective about who they want to spend their time with, secure fields are genuinely one of my favourite things.

And not because my dogs can’t be around other dogs.
They can.

But they don’t always want to be — and I don’t think they should have to.

A secure field gives us something that’s actually quite difficult to find in normal everyday life: space without social expectation.
No unknown dog suddenly appearing around a corner.
No off-lead dog running over while someone shouts “he’s friendly!”
No having to constantly scan the horizon or change direction.

They can sniff. Run. Play. Train. Potter about. Be ridiculous. Or do absolutely nothing. They also don’t have to sacrifice their own pace, Pops naturally moves a lot faster than me and Bas, so I love seeing her stretch out and move as she wants to.

And I can relax too.

I think sometimes we become so focused on making dogs “social” that we forget being selective or simply preferring their own little circle is perfectly okay.

My dogs don’t need to meet every dog they see to have full, happy lives.

Secure fields give them freedom, choice and the opportunity to just be dogs — without asking them to navigate situations they didn’t choose, without any cues for loose lead walking, hazard perception or the like.
We aim to do one a week and they both love it.
