The dreaded word… colic.

We have noticed an increased number of various types of colic in the past month, so please pay extra attention to the early warning colic signs.
A horse that’s:
* Not interested in their breakfast/dinner
* Unusually quiet or restless
* Looking at their tummy
* Lying down more than normal
* Not passing droppings or passing less than usual

These symptoms can quickly develop and become a sign of more acute abdominal pain, like: pawing, rolling, going up and down, curling the lip and/or sweating

If you’re ever worried that your horse isn’t themselves and may have abdominal pain, then please give us a call. Colic can worsen quickly, so it’s always best to speak to a vet and be on the safe side.

Look at these lucky ponies enjoying their stable fans! Sophie has a few different fans to help keep them comfortable during this heat—one is from Amazon and the others are actually from Temu!!

We thought we'd share in case you're looking for a bit of inspo for your own stables. There are lots of affordable fan options available from places like Amazon, Temu and other retailers to help keep your horses as cool as possible.

Hot Weather Reminder ☀️

With the current temperatures, please take extra care of your horses & ponies🩷🩷:

Ensure constant access to fresh, clean water
Provide shade wherever possible
Avoid riding or travelling during the hottest part of the day
Hose down and cool horses after exercise
Watch for signs of heat stress, including excessive sweating, rapid breathing, lethargy, or reluctance to move

Summer can be a challenging time for horses affected by skin allergies and environmental sensitivities.

Signs can include itching, rubbing, hair loss, urticaria (hives). In some cases, further investigation may help identify potential triggers and support longer-term management plans 🔍

Our vets can advise on:
* Allergy investigations
* Environmental management
* Symptom control options
* Individual treatment plans where appropriate

Our patient here, Fred🐴, recently underwent investigations for recurrent hives and skin irritation.

Following assessment, intradermal skin testing was performed to help guide his ongoing management plan. Longer-term allergy management options were discussed with his owner, including immunotherapy as part of his ongoing care.

Skin allergies in horses can be complex, and not every case requires allergy testing. Our vets can help advise on appropriate investigations and management options depending on the individual horse.
