What a wonderful day we had on Saturday! Over 150 people ignored the rain and turned up to enjoy a wealth of fun activities and things to make and take away!

Magical giant bubbles swirled through the air all afternoon. Children might still have been making, chasing and popping bubbles until dark if they could!

Banks of children (it was very popular) tapped away with hammers constantly to create a huge hoard of creative wooden beasties with Simon from Fearless People. All sorts of odds and ends were used and colourful patterns were added with felt tips.

Creativity and practicality were also flowing as children made fantastic colourful dens to hide in from sticks, canes and brightly coloured cloths and ribbons.

Beautiful yellow pom-pom flowers were made with Ama from Grow to school. Beckie, also from Grow to School let children use the process of Hapa-zome to pound blackberries into a natural dye for creating lovely patterns on cloth.

Tom Barden from Green Man Learning guided children through the satisfying craft of making flowers by feathering freshly cut hazel sticks from our coppice with draw knives on a traditional shave horse. More than a few spears were also whittled which is a quick way to learn the technique.

Many faces were painted with wonderful colourful creations including on some tiny babies to make your heart melt. Walking around were butterflies, tigers, spidermen, pirates and gorgeous artistic patterns by the talented Safeena.

Our own orchard's apples were macerated and pressed to produce deliciously sweet juice by many little helpers who also enjoyed sampling their own efforts. The juicing operation was overseen by Amanda and Nina from BEES Bradford Environmental Education Service.

Lots of children also created and took home their own terrarium which is a little ecosystem in a jar. A succulent plant then soil, sand and gravel layers all in a jar for their windowsills, guided by Laura Burfitt.

"Everyone is so happy! Not one person is on their phone.", one parent said as she looked around all the various stalls.

The day wouldn't have been such a success without all our amazing volunteers who we can't thank enough.

Our much loved Mindfulness Garden taster session and 8-week course is taking place at Horton Community Farm in September.

The taster session is Thursday the 10th of September, 1pm-3pm.

The course is open to anyone over 50, and carers of any age. We ask people to come to the taster session first to see if the course is a good fit for them.

**Please note you may not receive a response between Wed 26th of August and Mon 7th of Sep, but whoever signs up will be prioritised and contacted on a first come first served basis. Your place on the course will be confirmed after the taster.**

The course will particularly benefit you if you are struggling with your mental or physical health, experiencing chronic pain, if you’re feeling stressed, isolated, or simply need a break. 💚

The Mindfulness Garden explores breathworks meditation, nature connection and gardening; offering people the chance to connect, learn new skills, and cultivate self-compassion and self-care.

Autumn is a great time of year to attend, as the site is brimming with bright nutritious produce; tempting tomatoes, plentiful pumpkins, delicious aubergines, okra, and more besides! 🥦🍅🍏🫜

Record numbers of volunteers have enjoyed the exceptional weather this summer to make a huge difference at Horton Community Farm. A couple of times the heat was excessive but working earlier in the day meant we avoided the worst of it.

Highlights have included cutting a new path, developing the willow dome, relaxing in the shade with refreshments, and harvesting a huge range of fruit and veg (including squash, courgettes, cauliflower, salads, chillies, aubergines, blackberries & plums). We also have melons forming so look out for those if you pop by!

Horton Community Farm volunteers are the best! Massive thanks for all the effort poured into improving the site for nature and food growing.

We've packed our raised beds with salads and veg, tamed overgrown areas including tree stumps growing back and overhead branches, and kept the paths, lawns and hedges super neat.

We'll be growing food, making crafts, digging in the sand pit, baking 'pies' in our mud kitchen, and generally running wild! On hot days kids can paddle, splash about and cool off in the paddling pool so swimming costumes are recommended. Activities under cover if it's raining.
