We are overjoyed to announce that our inclusive volunteer programme has received a huge boost with a grant of Β£20,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund Awards for All programme.

This will extend our very popular volunteer programme by funding 'Food Growing Fridays' until the end of March. A wide range of people are helping to care for our food growing areas, boosting local food whilst learning new skills, getting outdoors and meeting new people! We have a fantastic bunch of folk volunteering at the moment. Whatever your ability or background we hope you can join us. Visit our website to register. https://hcf.org.uk/volunteering/

The site has already begun reaping the benefits with record numbers of volunteers turning out every week and achieving a great deal. This has included topping up beds with a massive delivery of specially formulated veggie soil, sowing loads of seeds and planting loads of seedlings, netting raised beds to protect from birds and wood-chipping paths using some convenient waste woodchip from council tree surgery. A massive thanks to all our volunteers for chipping in (pun intended!) and thanks to Awards for All for making it possible.

The course is open to anyone over the age of 50, and carers of any age. We ask people to come to the taster session first to see if the course is a good fit for them.

The course will particularly benefit those who are struggling with their mental or physical health, people experiencing chronic pain, and folks who are stressed or isolated.

The Mindfulness Garden explores breathworks meditation, nature connection and gardening. The course offers people the opportunity to connect, learn new skills, and cultivate self-compassion and self-care.

Rooted Together for asylum seekers and refugees.

We are delighted to launch our new programme, Rooted Together, for people seeking sanctuary (asylum seekers and refugees) in Bradford. Rooted Together will be tailored to the needs of those who attend. Sessions may include nature connection, organic food growing, campfire cooking, celebrating different cultures, diverse forms of movement, health and well-being activities, skill-sharing, mindfulness, and more besides.

Free lunch and travel reimbursement available.

Whilst these sessions are predominantly for adult asylum seekers and refugees in Bradford, children are welcome to come if they are out of school and childcare is not available.

Our first session will be this Friday 8th May. Folks can join us 11am-1pm or 1pm-3pm, or they can stay all day.

Booking is essential. Follow this link to fill in our booking form:

Our amazing volunteers have made a huge difference to Horton Community Farm so far this year, adding to the huge ongoing effort to maintain this vital urban green space and allow free activities for the community. Yesterday, 11 volunteers turned up to help our neighbouring untenanted plots by tidying up a large amount of fly-tipping and doing a thorough litter pick. This gave the look of the site a big lift.

A few weeks ago we created a fabulous dead hedge and extra gate around our pond, by knocking in stakes and stacking brash in between. It looks great, reuses waste branches and was fun to make!

Volunteer days are every Wednesday and Friday. https://hcf.org.uk/volunteering/

A massive thanks to npower Business Solutions Foundation https://npowerbusinesssolutions.com/foundation for funding this vital work and also Charis for administering the grant. This funding enables a wide range of people to come together, contribute to improving the space and benefit from being part of a community.

Thanks, also, to Volunteering Bradford and the University of Bradford's UBU Volunteering for enabling people to connect to us.

Unfortunately our polytunnel was badly vandalised which we are feeling incredibly downhearted about 😒. It needs a complete recover asap which we have the skills for but it will still cost us £850. If anyone feels able to donate any amount no matter how small it would really help. It's easy to donate via https://hcf.org.uk/donate/ We won't let this mindless destruction stop us continuing the amazing work that means so many people benefit from free activities at a wonderful urban green space so radically transformed from 17 years ago when it was an abandoned fly-tipped wasteland.
