May is Veterinary Nurse awareness month so we'd like to take the opportunity to highlight some of the jobs our RVNs do in practice on a daily basis to help care for your pets 🐾
Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) are highly qualified professionals who do a minimum of 2-3 years training via an apprenticeship, diploma or degree route. Training includes lectures, exams, assignments, dissertations, OSCEs and hours of placement. RVNs must complete at least 15 hours of additional training each year to remain on the register so our knowledge is kept up to date.
Meet our RVNs:
Katy, Natalie, Laura
Student Nurse: Kenzie
Some of our jobs include:
Lab - taking blood samples from the patient, running blood samples, packaging samples for the external lab, running urinalysis and microscopy 🩸
Surgery - RVNs set up theatre, prepare the patient, perform intubation, IV catheter placement and can scrub in to assist the surgeon.
Anaesthesia - RVNs monitor your pets' general anaesthesia during surgery so whilst our brilliant surgeons perform the surgery, the nurses are keeping your pets safe by monitoring their vitals and keeping the vet informed of the patient's condition 🩺
Imaging - RVNs position patients for xrays, take the xrays and process them. RVNs also assist with holding and supporting pets through ultrasound scans. 🩻
Hospital care - Nurses ensure the smooth recovery of patients post-op. Nurses also provide care for in-patients including administering medication, monitoring fluids, husbandry and providing companionship and care to your pets, making sure they're feeling as comfortable and safe as possible whilst in with us.
Pharmacy - When the vet prescribes medication, RVNs help with dispensing and preparing the medication 💊
Consults - Nurse consults include vaccinations, microchipping, nail clips, dressing changes, grooms and administering medication. Nurses also discharge patients after they've been in for the day, providing owners with instructions for their ongoing care at home.
Reception - Along with our receptionist, RVNs also take phone calls, book appointments, respond to queries, respond to emails and assist with general admin 📞
So it's clear to see that our RVNs are a very important part of our team 🥰
