Innocent interactions can lead to more serious ones…

Dogs are wonderful companions that provide incredible emotional and social benefits for children. However, even the most beloved family pet can feel overwhelmed. 🐾

Most dog bite incidents involving children happen during seemingly benign interactions, like a hug or a fuss, that the dog finds stressful.

Our mission is to help you "speak dog" so your family stays safe and happy.

Get in touch if you have any questions or concerns regarding your dogs behaviour, we’re always happy to help!

Meet Sarah 🐾

Our go-to Clinic Nurse here at Shearbridge, Sarah plays a key role in supporting both pets and their owners every day.

She loves running our senior and weight clinics, as well as our Puppy Parties — giving her the chance to help you give your pets the very best care. She's even got her own cat in the weight clinics and is seeing amazing progress!

We asked Sarah what inspired her to become a veterinary nurse and what she enjoys most about her role:

“I became a vet nurse because I wanted to help animals and improve their welfare.

The thing I love most about my job is being able to educate pet owners and support the animal-owner bond through the pets life journey. By providing support and information through puppy parties and nurse clinics.”

Thank you for everything you do, Sarah 💙

You may think that the most common cause of ear problems are simple infections but this is not the case. It is most often due to parasites, foreign bodies e.g. grass seeds or an underlying allergy.

Ears are part of the skin and so poorly ears can be the first, and sometimes only, sign of an underlying allergic skin disease.

If you notice any redness, inflammation or darkening of the skin on your pet’s outer ear (pinna) and/or their ears are itchy we would recommend a check. Early identification of the underlying cause helps to reduce the risk of chronic ear changes which helps reduce
the risk of recurrent ear problems.

If your pet has recurrent ear infections or recurrent ear irritation, it could be a sign of an underlying skin condition – we would recommend a check to examine and discuss your options.

🌡☀️Keeping your pets cool in the hot weather!☀️🌡

Heatstroke is a life threatening condition that develops if an animal becomes overheated 🥵

Any dog can develop heatstroke but flat-faced/brachycephalic, overweight, giant-breeds, double-coated breeds or very young and senior dogs are most at risk.

Playing or exercising outside in the heat can increase the risk of heat stroke. However, it can also be caused by being in a hot room without proper ventilation, being kept in a car (even with windows open a crack- it is far too hot for them!), laying in a conservatory or under-ventilated kennel.

Some tips for helping your pups stay cool:

🌞Only walk when it is cooler- early mornings or later evening. Avoid walking at peak heat times (12pm-4/5pm)!
🌞Lighter exercising only (even when its cooled down)- allow lots of breaks between play, provide lots of shade and plenty of water.
🌞Try something fun like making doggy "icepops", freezing their kong toys or putting some kibble in water and freezing this!

If you have any concerns your dog or cat may be suffering from heat stroke do not hesitate to give us a call! If we’re not open you’ll be redirected to our out of hours.
