𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 …. 🐕

Whilst out walking my own dog in the woods over the weekend we bumped into one of Winnie’s TGOP friends, Aster, and her human. We wandered a few hundred yards before starting to go our separate ways.

In the distance, I heard someone calling their dog and, as we approached, saw the dog come hurtling towards us. 🐕

It then proceeded to chase Aster and mither her … it was clear from her behaviour and body language that Aster didn’t want to play.
As they continued on, the dog - only young - came hurtling towards us.

Now I know very well Winnie isn’t going to tolerate being jumped on as it was doing to Aster. So I intervened and used my body to block the dog, preventing it from doing so.

Now this poor owner was really trying, but the dog was in its teenage stage and all recall was ‘out of the window’, according to them.
Perfectly normal for a teenage dog! 🐾

The person’s other issue beside recall was that they couldn’t catch the dog once up close to it .
This is a really common problem, recall aside. And it all becomes a game for the dog when we chase them. ⚠️

𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁?

💡 𝗔 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝘁!

Obviously, not letting the dog practice running up to other dogs is paramount, and using a long line prevents that .
In the event things go a little awry, that one thing as back up can really be a huge help whilst your dog is fully over puppy and teenage stages. 🐾
As your dog improves the line can trail but you can soon pick it up and manage the situation before it gets out of hand.

Hello I’m Sam and I’m the founder of The Great OutPaws .
We were founded in 2016 .

My daughter Emily joined me a few years later helping out and is now a fully fledge member of the team .

One I couldn’t actually have got by without … so thank you firstly to Em. ❤️

✨ 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 ? ✨

In 2015 my nana passed away. This hit me hard and I went to some sessions of group cbt ( cognitive behavioural therapy)

In these sessions we had to do a little thing each week we’d not done previously … challenging ourselves to be a bit braver , step outside our comfort zone - among other exercises which were really useful in my recovery and grieving process.

It was this that set me on the path to dog walking . I had dreamed of dog walking for a good 8 years previous to this .
And so I finally felt like this horribly sad event that had taken me quite by surprise ( i’d never thought about how losing my last grandparent would feel and it was huge, and it hit in a way I was not expecting) would actually turn into a long time dream!

🐾 𝗦𝗼 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 , 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 , 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗿 , 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗶’𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. 🐾

Financially and time wise I was in a position to start up along side my other business so it was a perfect opportunity!

And so it began, it wasn’t easy to start , putting myself out there , jumping on a post in a group where someone was wanting a dog walker. And I still hate that and do really still question if it actually works??

So that’s one reason I have a website , and I’ve done a ton of courses too .

📚 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲. 🐾

I never fitted in at school and struggled because of that. So to make my own choices and do what I truly was interested in was such a game changer in my learning experiences!

So here we are . And I’m back doing more walking again after a bit of a step back, so hello from me !

🐾 𝓜𝓮𝓮𝓽 𝓗𝓪𝓷𝓴 🐾

I’m really looking forward to Hank joining our group walks at the end of October! 🥰
We had a meet and greet last week and boy those eyes ! I had to look away …. He’s going to have me eating out his hand never mind the other way around ha ha !

Anyway on with the point of this post ….

We don’t usually post our new dogs until they’ve settled in with us, but I thought I’d explain a little bit about why we have a settling-in period here at The Great OutPaws.

Once we’ve had a meet & greet and decided that we’re a good fit for your dog, we have a 4 week settling-in period.

This just gives us a bit of time to make sure your dog is in the right group for them.

If we feel they’d be happier in a different group, we’ll chat to you about it and look at another option — or even a different dog walker if we think that would suit them better.

But why?

Because not all groups suit all dogs. And that’s totally normal!

It doesn’t mean your dog is “naughty” or that there’s anything wrong with them at all. Sometimes certain dogs just click better with some groups than others, and it’s our job to work that out. 🐶❤️

We’d rather be upfront about this from the start, so when you sign up with us you know exactly how things work and there are no surprises.

The good news is, things always seem to work out well. 🥰

We just like to be open and honest with you and, most importantly, make sure the dogs are happy.

🎆 HOW CAN WE SUPPORT OUR DOGS THROUGH THE FIREWORKS SEASON AND BONFIRE NIGHT?

It can be extremely distressing to see your dog in a state of panic and fear. Feeling at a loss as all your attempts to pacify your dog fail.

🐾 WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP?

There are a lot of measures we can take ourselves to support and manage the environment.

Earlier walks. Shorter walk or no walks at all for a few days
Keep your dog on lead whilst out for a walk .

Comfort them if they will allow you to .

More decompression for our dog in the form of chews and sniffing / scattering food to find.

🎶 SOUND MANAGEMENT

Playing white noise , classical music or taiko drums on a speaker.

Taiko drums help dogs during fireworks because their deep heavy bass acts as effective white noise. This low-frequency sound drowns out the sharp, terrifying cracks of outdoor bangs.

🏠 CREATE A SAFE SPACE

Create a safe space using dark and heavy blankets over it, draw blinds and curtains.

Secure windows , doors , gates and cat flaps

🧡 OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER

Adaptil. Pheromone plug ins and collars

Thundershirts - applies mild constant pressure, lowers elevated heart rate.

T Touch.

💊 PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION

If your dog doesn’t respond well to all of the above, it would be wise to seek veterinary advice.

Anxiety medication can be prescribed and your vet will tell you how to administer it.

It should generally be given before the event takes place in the case of short term medication .
This is quite easy to predict around bonfire night as the evenings are dark early on and this usually predicts that people will set off fireworks soon after.

There are 2 types of medication.

Medication used for noise sensitivities includes short term and long term medication.

Short term / fast acting:
Trazodone, Sileo, gabapentin, diazepam.

Long term:
Fluoxetine, alprazolam. These should commence weeks before so now is a good time to speak to your vet.

These are all things you may wish to consider when supporting your dog through firework season.

Always consult your vet if your dog is sensitive to fireworks .
