🌡️ Which hamster substrate actually stays coolest?

Rather than guessing, I decided to test it.

I left a range of common hamster substrates in a warm room for four hours before measuring their temperatures to see which stayed coolest.

I tested:
🐹 Hay
🌿 Aspen
🪵 Beech chips
🥥 Coco chips
🌰 Cork granules
🌱 Soil
🏖️ Sand

The results genuinely surprised me!

Cooling substrates won't replace good husbandry, but they can give your hamster somewhere naturally cooler to sit, groom and relax during warm weather.

Have you noticed your hamster choosing one area of their enclosure more than others when it's hot? ☀️

Don't at me, yes I look tired. I'd literally just woken up and it was already 24°C in my kitchen. 🥵

But I wanted to show you something important.

A lot of people worry that deep bedding will make their hamster hotter during a heatwave, but when I checked the temperature, the bedding was actually cooler than the air around it.

That's because deep bedding acts as insulation. The deeper layers warm up much more slowly than the room, giving your hamster somewhere cooler to retreat to.

So if you're dealing with hot weather:
🐹 Keep deep bedding
🐹 Avoid reducing substrate depth
🐹 Try not to disturb or mix up the bedding unless necessary

Your hamster's burrow is one of their best natural defences against the heat.

Have you checked the temperature under your hamster's bedding?

P.S. Please don't put meat thermometers into your bedding if your hamster is under it!

Sylvie never used to eat flax.

Now I have an entire bouquet of evidence suggesting otherwise. 🌾🐹

This is all from flax sprays she's worked her way through recently, and honestly it's become a bit of an obsession.

It's a good reminder not to write foods or enrichment off too quickly. Sometimes a hamster will ignore something for months and then suddenly decide it's the greatest invention in hamster history.

It isn't easy to spot the signs of heart failure in hamsters.

Sylvie did this every time she ate or drank and I was told it was “just a quirk.”

It wasn’t.

Sometimes Sylvie falls asleep mid free roam and I have to gently wake her up to take her back to her enclosure 🥹

She has a very special skill where she becomes… heavy pancake. Completely unbothered. Unmovable. At peace with the universe 🤭

(Don’t worry, she chooses to come out, and I only move her when it’s time to go home 💜)
