It isn't easy to spot the signs of heart failure in hamsters.

Sylvie did this every time she ate or drank and I was told it was “just a quirk.”

It wasn’t.

Sometimes Sylvie falls asleep mid free roam and I have to gently wake her up to take her back to her enclosure 🥹

She has a very special skill where she becomes… heavy pancake. Completely unbothered. Unmovable. At peace with the universe 🤭

Sylvie is one year old! 🐹💜

I didn’t do cake or candles or a party, because that’s not really her style.

Instead, she’s been getting what she loves most: her favourite treats, gentle enrichment, extra freedom, and the comfort of choice.

The last months have been about learning her preferences, building trust, and letting her set the pace.

She’s funny.
She’s stubborn.
She’s soft in the ways that matter.

Getting to really know her has been a privilege 💜

A little transparency moment 💜
Because I always want to be true to my word.
Back in December, Hamster Helper donated £618 to hamster rescues and charities.
I shared this in the newsletter at the time, but realised I never properly shared it here, so here it is 💜
*Furever Loved and Rowan Tree Rescue Received £110 worth of hamster food each
* India's Hamster Rescue and Hundred Acre Rescue received £199 each
I don’t love performative charity posts, so I tend to share these quietly, but I do want you to know that your orders genuinely make a difference.
For January and February, I’ve set aside £318.31 to donate next.
Some of that will be going to Fable (as promised 🐹), and the rest will be shared with other rescues doing important work.
Thank you for trusting me, supporting the shop, and helping me turn hamster love into real-world help.
I’ll share where the Jan/Feb donations land once they’re made 💜

You might notice the coco chips look a little different, and that was an intentional change 🌱

I switched to a different grade after testing and observing how it affected texture, comfort, and behaviour. Sylvie took to these straight away.

Sometimes small, considered changes make a big difference.

I get asked all the time how I mount my camera inside the enclosure, so here it is 📷

This is the simple setup I use in my Bucatstate enclosure, no drilling, no clamps, and no disturbance for the hamster.

If you want a more detailed walkthrough (including the exact camera settings I use to flip the image so it isn’t upside down, and where I get the velcro circles), I’ve shared a longer tutorial on YouTube 💜

Sylvie and I have had some really lovely bonding moments over the last couple of months, and that inspired what I wanted to do for Valentine’s Day 💕

I talk to so many people about their hamsters, everything from skin care to weight changes, and bonding comes up a lot as something that feels hard to get right and can be frustrating for owners.

So this year I focused on creating hamster-first treats, toys, and substrates designed for calm bonding, foraging, and joyful moments for humans and hams to share.
