You may have seen people talking about the new “dog walking law” starting today — and it’s something every dog owner (and dog walker) really needs to be aware of. 🐾
From today, the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025 has officially come into force across England and Wales — and it’s a big change.
This isn’t about stopping you enjoying walks with your dog… but it is about responsibility.
Here’s what you need to know:
⚠️ Your dog does NOT need to touch livestock to break the law
Even chasing, barking at, or disturbing animals like sheep, cows or alpacas can now be classed as an offence
💷 Fines are now unlimited
Previously capped at £1,000, penalties can now be much more serious
🐑 The law now applies beyond fields
This includes public footpaths, roads and anywhere livestock may be present
👮 Police have more powers
Including the ability to seize dogs and gather evidence if needed
As a trainer, this is something I see time and time again…
“Well, my dog wouldn’t hurt anything.”
But the truth is — it’s not about intent, it’s about impact.
Even the friendliest dog can chase.
Even the best dog can get it wrong.
And in those moments, the consequences can now be very real.
This is why training matters.
