Border Terrier

Characteristics: Friendly, affectionate, lively, clever and confident ❤️

What they were bred for: Hunting foxes and small vermin, working alongside horses and hounds and underground hunting 🪏🐎

Coat type: Harsh and dense; with close undercoat 🐾

Correct way to groom: The key to grooming is to maintain its natural, wiry double coat, traditionally hand-stripped as this allows the new coat to come through and maintains the wiry texture 🫧

Ideal schedule: hand-strip every 3-4 months depending on coat, brush 1-2 times weekly, bathe every 2-3 months or when needed 🛁

Things to keep an eye on: dental disease, allergies and skin problems, epilepsy, hip issues, heart problems 🦷

Characteristics: Keen, alert, responsive and intelligent. Neither nervous nor aggressive ‼️

What they were bred for: The Border Collie is still seen performing the task for which it was bred, working sheep (and cattle) and its fitness for function is seen in its speed, its innate herding instinct and its stealthy gait and carriage 🐏

Coat type: Two varieties: 1) Moderately long; 2) Smooth. In both, topcoat dense and medium textured, undercoat soft and dense giving good weather resistance ☔️

Correct way to groom: Brush 2-3 times a week and during shedding season (spring and autumn) everyday/every other day, bathe every 6-12 weeks and unless there’s a medical reason or severe matting, don’t shave a Border Collie 🪮

Ideal schedule: Every 8-12 weeks 📆

Things to keep an eye on: Hip and elbow problems, eye conditions, epilepsy, allergies and skin issues, anxiety 🦴

What they were bred for: bred to be companion dogs 💖

Coat type: long, flocked without curl covering entire head and body ☁️

Correct way to groom: unique coat that should be kept soft and fluffy. Their coat is hair rather than fur, so it sheds very little but mats easily if not maintained 💆‍♀️

Ideal schedule: brush 3-7 times a week, bathe every 3-6 weeks
Things to keep an eye on: patellar luxation, dental disease, eye problems, ear infections, allergies and skin irritation 🧴
