🌞 How hot is too hot to walk your dog? 🐾

As the temperature rises, so does the risk of heatstroke. Even a short walk on a warm day can be dangerous for your dog.

🐶 Use this as a general guide only.

✔️ Walk your dog during the coolest parts of the day – early morning or late evening.
✔️ Avoid over exercising.
✔️ Always take fresh water with you.

Please take extra care with:
🐾 Puppies
🐾 Senior dogs
🐾 Overweight dogs
🐾 Dogs with underlying health conditions
🐾 Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs and Boxers

If you're unsure, it's always safer to skip the walk and keep your dog cool at home.

Reminder for over the Bank Holiday weekend! ☀️🐾

As lovely as it is to see the sunshine, please take extra care with your pets in the warm weather.

We advise walking dogs early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Always take fresh water with you on walks and try to prevent your dogs from drinking seawater, as this can make them unwell.

Ensure all of your pets have plenty of shade and constant access to fresh water throughout the day.💧

Please watch out for:
🐾 Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
🐾 Drooling more than usual
🐾 Lethargy or weakness
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🐾 Bright red gums or tongue
🐾 Confusion, wobbling, or collapse

If you have any concerns regarding your pet in the heat, please contact us immediately.

Stay safe and have a lovely bank holiday weekend!☀️

It’s that time of year folks!!!

Grass seed season is here! 🌱🐾

Grass seeds may look harmless, but they can cause serious problems and discomfort. They can become trapped in paws, ears, eyes, noses, and even under the skin, leading to pain, swelling, and infection.

Make sure to familiarise yourself with the signs and check your dog after every walk. 🐶

If you think your dog has a grass seed or you are unsure, please contact us!

As we head into the summer months, please keep an eye out for signs of flystrike in your rabbits and guinea pigs. ☀️🐰🐹

Flystrike happens when flies lay eggs on soiled or wet fur, usually around the tail area. The eggs then hatch into maggots that burrow into the skin, causing severe pain and suffering.

Make sure you’re familiar with the signs of flystrike and are keeping up with preventative care measures.

Flystrike is a veterinary emergency and early treatment is vital.

If you notice your rabbit or guinea pig is showing any of these signs, please book an appointment for a check-up as an emergency! 01202 484466

We’ve already treated our first adder bite case of the year this week, so now is a good time to stay extra vigilant.

Here are our top tips for keeping your dog safe on their walks👇🐾

Remember Priory are one of the few vets locally to stock anti-venom on site at our Christchurch hospital 24/7.
