Meet my foster dog, Kevin 😍
I’ve been looking after him for the last few weeks whilst he recovers from major surgery 🥺
Kevin is a quirky character and his big eyes make me go weak at the knees ☺️
At first he was a little upset when I left him alone and so I’ve been teaching him to feel more comfortable when I go out.
We’ve worked on reducing his reliance on my attention and encouraged independent behaviour and he’s now much more content being alone.
If your dog dislikes being on their own I always recommend working with a professional as there may be more than meets the eye and a behaviourist can help you navigate through this.
However, heres a few things that I continue to do to help Kevin settle
🐾 I give him the chance to toilet before I leave and make sure he’s fed and watered
🐾 I create cosy spot in my living room, often leaving him with the fluffiest of blankets and a recently worn t-shirt with my scent on
🐾 I give him a tasty chew to keep him occupied and prevent him from becoming bored
🐾 I switch on Heart FM to drown out any outside noises and so that there’s the comfort of voices
🐾 I never leave Kevin more than a few hours at a time and I have a doggy cam so that I can keep watch over him
🐾 When I arrive home I greet him in a calm manner and then busy myself for a few minutes before taking the time to fully engage with him.
Did you know that ignoring our dogs when we first arrive home can actually be harmful for our relationship with them?
We certainly don’t want to over excite them with our arrival but by ignoring them, we leave them feeling confused, and for a dog that has been distressed by their humans absence this only adds to their anxiety.
This is why I’m sure to greet Kevin calmly for a couple of minutes before busying myself. This way, I’ve acknowledged him but haven’t made a big deal out of coming home.
What special act of kindness do you do for your four legged best friend when you go out? 🐶
