🐾 Introducing Walter… 🐾
A few months ago, Walter was rushed into our practice after being involved in a road traffic accident. He was in a critical condition when he arrived and required urgent stabilisation and treatment 💉
Initial radiographs confirmed that Walter had a pneumothorax- where air accumulates around the lungs, making it difficult for them to expand normally. The air was safely drained via a procedure called thoracocentesis 🫁
Walter then underwent major abdominal surgery after we identified significant internal haemorrhaging from a lacerated spleen. Unfortunately, his spleen was severely damaged and required surgical removal. 🩺
Due to the extent of Walter’s blood loss, he also required an autotransfusion. This involved collecting the blood that had pooled within his abdomen, carefully processing it, and then returning it intravenously. This helped to restore Walter’s circulating blood volume! 🩸
But Walter wasn’t finished yet! 🐶
His initial radiographs also revealed a luxated (dislocated) hip, which was initially replaced. 🩻Unfortunately, due to damage to the supporting structures around the joint, the hip subsequently redislocated. Walter underwent another anaesthetic for open reduction and pelvic toggle surgery to permanently stabilise his hip. 🦴
Walter spent approximately one week in hospital, receiving round-the-clock care and monitoring from our dedicated veterinary team. ❤️🩹
It was certainly a challenging time for Walter, but thanks to his owner’s quick action, the dedication of our team, and the skill and expertise involved in his surgeries, anaesthesia and ongoing care, this incredibly brave boy has gone on to make a full recovery, enjoying life again!(As seen in the last 2 photos) 🥰
Well done Walter, what a brave and resilient boy! ❤️🐶
