This guys!! ๐๐
I posted this to my Tips Group but I also thought it would be helpful on this page ๐ I use this daily!
Building on Small Circles Around You
Once your horse understands how to walk small circles around you, crossing the inside hind leg underneath their body, you can gradually progress the exercise by asking the hindquarters to step further away whilst keeping the shoulders relatively still.
Think of it as moving from a small circle into a gentle hindquarter yield. As the hindquarters step around, the inside hind leg must continue to cross underneath and across the body. This encourages greater engagement of the hindquarters, increased activation of the core muscles, and improved mobility through the pelvis and lower back.
The key is not speed. Ask for a few calm, deliberate steps, rewarding any attempt to move the hindquarters away while maintaining balance and relaxation. The shoulders should stay as quiet as possible, with the movement coming primarily from the hind end.
Benefits of progressing to a hindquarter yield include:
โ
Greater hind limb engagement and strength
โ
Improved pelvic and lumbar mobility
โ
Increased body awareness and coordination
โ
Better control of individual body parts
โ
Enhanced balance and postural stability
โ
Encourages the horse to lift through the back and work more correctly from behind.
Remember, quality is always more important than quantity. Just a few correct steps can be far more beneficial than many rushed or unbalanced ones. Enjoy โบ๏ธ
