☀️🐾 Heat Awareness for Pets 🐾☀️

As the warmer weather arrives, it’s important to remember that heat can quickly become dangerous for our pets. Unlike us, dogs and cats cannot cool themselves down as easily, and heatstroke can happen faster than many people realise.

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your pets safe this summer:
Make sure fresh water is always available
Walk dogs during the cooler parts of the day
Never leave pets in a parked car — even for a few minutes
Provide shady spots and cool areas to rest
Be mindful that pavements can burn paws in hot weather

Signs of heatstroke can include:
⚠️ Excessive panting
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Weakness or collapse
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Confusion or distress

If you are worried your pet may be overheating, contact your vet immediately.

Clinical Case Study Episode 1

Hyperthyroidism in Cats

This is Nutmeg. Nutmeg came to the practice for her annual vaccinations, however, it was noted by her lovely owner and vet Molly that she had lost weight compared to last year, despite eating well. Following her vaccinations, her owners tried for several weeks to feed her up but she gained no weight. At this point, we decided to do some blood testing on Nutmeg and discovered that she has a condition called hyperthyroidism. Nutmeg is now on medication to control her thyroid and doing much better!

What is hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism is a common condition in older cats where the thyroid gland produces too much hormone, causing the body to run at an over‑active “high speed”.

Common clinical signs include:
Weight loss despite a good or increased appetite, increased thirst and urination, restlessness or irritability, vomiting or diarrhoea, and a poor or unkempt coat.

Treatment options:
There are several effective treatment options available, and the best choice depends on your cat’s health, lifestyle, and your preferences. Nutmeg here has started on a daily medication called Thyronorm and is doing brilliantly!

🌈🐾 World Pet Memorial Day 🐾🌈
Today we remember the pets who have left pawprints on our hearts forever.
One of the kindest gifts we can give our companions is a life filled with love, comfort and happiness — and when the time is right, a peaceful goodbye. Although making that decision is incredibly hard, it is often the final act of love we can offer.
As a veterinary team, these moments affect us too. We share in the sadness, because we know how deeply loved every pet is. It is never an easy goodbye, but helping a beloved pet have a gentle, dignified end to a good life is something we are honoured to do.

We are unlikely to have power in the practice this morning. Northern PowerGrid are estimating 10:30 for a return to service. This means our phones and broadband will be down (including access to records, unfortunately). If you have a very urgent issue, please attend the practice and we will endeavour to see you asap but please be aware that there will be a triage system in place and therefore there may be a wait.

Microchip checklist:

- Does your pet have one? Only feral cats are exempt, otherwise microchips are legal requirements for cats and dogs in the UK.
- Are the details registered to the chip up to date with your current contact details?
- Beware of scams - microchips do not expire and you do not have to pay subscription fees.

🐾💙 Vet Nurse Awareness Month 💙🐾

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible work of our veterinary nurses here at Boroughbridge Vets!

Our nurses are at the heart of everything we do – from caring for your pets during surgery and monitoring anaesthetics, to running clinics, giving advice, and making sure every patient feels safe, comfortable and loved. Here is a snapshot of Fiona and Frankie taking bloods, clipping claws and running a weight clinic.

We’re especially proud that our Head Nurse, Fiona, is also one of the practice owners, alongside vet Katy. It’s a brilliant reflection of just how vital veterinary nurses are in delivering exceptional patient care. 💛

They’re highly skilled, compassionate professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes (and on the front line!) to provide the very best care for your pets every single day.

We’re so grateful for our amazing nursing team and all that they do. ✨
