Before you watch The Heart of the Beast and immediately decide you NEED a German Shepherd because Odin is an absolute badass⦠let this be your warning.
Dogs donβt just wake up one morning knowing how to do the things Odin does.
That takes TIME. Training. Consistency. And then more training. More training after that and quite possibly even more training after the training.
When youβre tired? Train.
When youβre poorly? Train.
When youβve got 47 other things you need to be doing? Train anyway.
German Shepherds are incredibly smart, high-energy working dogs. They NEED a job. And if you donβt give them one, thereβs a pretty good chance theyβll assign themselves oneβ¦ and you probably wonβt like the job they chose.
Want some alone time? Forget it.
Bathroom? You have a bathroom buddy.
Shower? Always supervised.
Cooking tea? Quality control is present. Eyes always watching you.
Walking from one room to another? Congratulations, you now have a 30-40kg shadow forever by your side.
And if you like dark-coloured clothesβ¦ you can forget them ever being clean. Welcome to German Shepherd glitter. Itβs on your top, fleece, trousers, dress, leggings. Itβs in your car, van, motorbike. Itβs in your food. Itβs somehow in places the dog has never even been!!!
And it NEVER. GOES. AWAY.
Also highly driven and toy and food obsessed, watch your fingers, hands, arms, bum, legs and everything inbetween! They're dangerous π
Theyβre loyal, brilliant, protective, hilarious, clingy, hairy little psychopaths, and I wouldnβt trade mine for anything.
But Odin is the result of HARD WORK, not just genetics.
So before The Heart of the Beast convinces you to bring home that adorable German Shepherd puppyβ¦
Just know this, you are not getting Odin!
Youβre getting a full-time training partner, a personal bodyguard, a bathroom supervisor, a professional shedder, and a furry toddler with a set of teeth.
Do not not jump on the naive pet owners band wagon because of this film! It really isnt a good idea. I just hope that people can really appreciate this breed for what they are and leave them in the hands of experienced and knowledgeable people. And we dont get an influx of abandoned GSD youngsters in rescue centres.
