Andrew Melling Vets Independent large animal vet practice based in Horwich. We treat all equine and farm animals across Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

Andrew Melling set up the practice in 1992. The practice has since expanded, and now has 5 vets and 4 office staff. We always strive to offer the very best veterinary care possible at the lowest price possible. We treat all equine and farm animals whether on a working farm or those kept as pets including cows, sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, pigs and poultry as well as horses and donkeys.

Zeus’s story 🐴

Our team saw Zeus OOH back in May when he presented with a sudden onset, severe lameness following a kick from another horse. 🐎
Although there was no wound present, the heat and swelling present in the leg allowed us to localise his lameness to the hock region. After discussing all possibilities with his owner, our team returned the following day to take some x-rays - in order to look for a fracture 🦴.
The x-rays showed an unusual fracture involving the calcaneus (a bone in the hock). Referral to a hospital for surgery and ongoing management wasn’t an option for Zeus, so the owners along with our team decided to trial conservative management at home, as a last resort🤞🏼
After a tough 3 months of box rest, Robert Jones bandaging, repeat x-rays and A LOT of patience from his owners, we are thrilled to say Zeus is happy (although going slightly mad after being stuck in!!) and sound and the fracture has healed! You can see the images below for a before and after image of his fracture! ☺️
Zeus has been a wonderful patient and we are so happy he is now sound and on the road to recovery ❤️‍🩹 although we don’t want to be seeing him again anytime soon🤣
Cases like Zeus demonstrate the importance of prompt veterinary intervention - the sooner we see these cases, the quicker we can provide pain relief and support to our patients, in order to keep them as comfortable as possible 🩺

Bank Holiday Weekend 🌺

✨REMINDER ✨

The office will be closed on Monday 31st August due to the bank holiday. Our standard out of hours service will run until Tuesday morning at 8.30am when the office will reopen.

As always, we hope you won’t need us, but should you need any veterinary assistance please phone the office number as usual and you will be connected to our out of hours service and vet.

Should you need to collect any medications the office is open today (Saturday) until 12pm!

🪱 MAGGOTS🪱

Not a word any vet or owner wants to hear, but sadly something we are seeing a lot more of due to longer, hotter and more humid summers 🌞

As a practice we have seen more than 10 cases of fly strike in the last week in all species including sheep, goats and horses!

If you have a sheep or goat who is quieter than normal, not eating, has an unexplained high temperature you must consider fly strike as a possible cause 🪰

In most equine cases we have seen, the maggots have been in the sheath or on the p***s. The horses usually present with mild colic symptoms such a kicking the belly, tail swishing, high temperature, rolling, but usually they will still want to eat 🤒

Prompt veterinary attention is vital for a successful outcome, so if you suspect fly strike in an animal, call your vet ASAP.

As always prevention is better than treatment, so ensure you apply fly spray on horses, shear sheep, apply topical blowfly strike pour ons such a clik and crovect, ensuring you reapply as necessary! Most pour ons are only effective for up to 8 weeks so have worn off by this time of year, hence why we see such a spike in cases at the end of summer.

We are looking for a new summer themed cover photo for our page. If you want your animal(s) to feature please submit a photo in the comments below. The picture must be (loosely) summer themed and the winner will be chosen by our team in 1 week (9th August).
The winning photo will be our new cover photo for the remainder of the summer and will also win a bag of Hestevard crunch tabs (see photo below) 😋
