A lovely group of 8 geldings all had their Equine Intimate Health Checks and hygiene cleans, and they were absolutely brilliant throughout! 💙

They were all so well behaved and made my job a pleasure. It’s lovely knowing they are now feeling cleaner, more comfortable and so much better following their hygiene checks.

A big thank you to their owners for prioritising their boys’ intimate health and wellbeing. 🐎❤️

🐴✨ Another happy group of boys after their hygiene checks! ✨🐴

All of these lovely boys were very well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed their cleans. 💙

3 out of the 4 had a bean or two removed, highlighting just how common they can be, and why routine intimate health checks are such an important part of your horse’s overall care.

Even when a horse isn’t showing any obvious signs of discomfort, beans and sm**ma build-up can cause irritation and discomfort, along with many other problems.

These boys can now enjoy feeling cleaner, more comfortable and happier following their professional intimate health checks. 🐴❤️

Regular checks can help identify and address any build-up before it becomes a problem.

📩 If your horse is due their routine check, please get in touch to arrange an appointment.

🫘🐴 DID YOU KNOW ABOUT URETHRAL BEANS?

A urethral bean is a compacted build-up of sm**ma that can form within the urethral fossa of a gelding or stallion (
What's important to remember is that you can't always tell there is a bean there just by looking at the sheath from the outside.

Some horses can have a significant bean, without showing obvious signs of discomfort.
Others may display subtle changes in behaviour, such as:
🐴 Becoming sensitive when the hindquarters are touched
🐴 Difficulty urinating comfortably
🐴 Changes in behaviour or ridden performance
🐴 Increased irritation or discomfort around the sheath
🐴 Repeatedly dropping the p***s

However, these signs can have many different causes, so they should never automatically be attributed to a bean. If you're concerned about a change in your horse, veterinary advice should always be sought.

This is why regular professional intimate health checks are so important.
A check allows the area to be properly assessed and any abnormal build-up to be identified. If anything unusual is found, I can advise when veterinary attention may be appropriate.

✨ Your horse doesn't have to be showing a problem before you have them checked.
Intimate health should be considered alongside their other routine care, just like teeth, feet, vaccinations and other essential health checks.

🫘 Sometimes removing something small can make a huge difference to a horse's comfort. ❤️

📩 If your gelding or stallion is due an intimate health check, or you'd simply like to know more about what's involved, please feel free to contact Julie's Equine Sheath Health.

🐴 DID YOU KNOW THAT MARES CAN GET BEANS TOO? 🫘

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that beans are only something we need to worry about in geldings.

That simply isn't the case.
Mares can also develop a build-up of sm**ma and form beans within the cl****al area. In some mares, this can become quite significant without the owner being aware that anything is there.

The important thing to remember is that a horse doesn't necessarily have to show obvious signs of discomfort for there to be a problem.
During a professional intimate health check, I can carefully assess the area and identify any build-up that may need attention.

Regular checks can help to:
🐴 Maintain good hygiene
🫘 Identify and remove problematic build-up
❤️ Help maintain your mare's comfort
🔎 Identify anything unusual that may require veterinary attention (Important note: Equine Hygienists can only advise and NOT diagnose)
✨ Keep intimate health as part of your horse's normal care routine.

Just like geldings, mares deserve appropriate intimate health care too.
And sometimes what looks completely normal from the outside can tell a very different story when properly checked.

So, when was the last time your mare had an intimate health check? 🐴💗
Don't wait until your horse shows signs of discomfort. Prevention and regular professional checks are an important part of responsible horse care.

I genuinely can’t tell you how much I enjoy my job as an Equine Hygienist. 🐴❤️

Knowing that I’ve been able to make a real difference to a horse’s comfort and wellbeing is incredibly rewarding.

Whether it’s carefully removing a bean or beans 🫘, relieving discomfort caused by a large build-up of sm**ma, or carrying out a thorough intimate health check, it’s so satisfying knowing that the horse can feel more comfortable afterwards.

Every horse is different, and I always take the time to work calmly, patiently and professionally, with the horse’s welfare as my absolute priority.

For me, this isn’t simply a job, it’s about providing a professional service that contributes to the health, comfort and wellbeing of every horse I have the privilege of caring for.

I’m incredibly passionate about what I do and so grateful to every owner who trusts me with their horses. 💕🐎

Regular Equine Intimate Health Checks should be part of your horse’s routine care.

🐴 “Mares don’t get beans…” think again!

For those who believe mares don’t get beans, these were all removed from one mare during her intimate health check.

Imagine how uncomfortable she must have been carrying this build-up. Having these carefully removed will help improve her comfort and overall wellbeing.

This is a great reminder that mares need regular intimate health checks too, not just geldings.
Even when there are no obvious signs of a problem, build-up can occur and cause discomfort.
Regular hygiene checks should be an important part of your horse’s routine care, helping to maintain their comfort, health and wellbeing. 🐴✨
