What should you do in an emergency?

🚨 Get your pet to a vet - if you're away from home, go to the nearest vet in an emergency. We aren't fussed if you don't come to us, just prioritise getting your pet the help they need!

📲 Call ahead - It's best to ring ahead so that the vet knows to expect you and can prepare for an emergency case.

❌ If the vets are closed - Don't worry, even when closed, all vets provide an out-of-hours service, either directly or through another vet.

At Croft, you will automatically be directed to Vets Now out of hours.

🌡️ 𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞 🌡️

Heat stroke is when your pets body is unable to cope with an internal rise in temperature and cannot cool themselves down. Rises in body temperature can damage tissue and organs and is an emergency 🚨.

𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞

⚠️ Pets that are overweight
⚠️ Brachycephalic (flat faced) breeds
⚠️ Pets with long or thick coats
⚠️ Large breeds, particularly those over 50kg
⚠️ Old or very young animals
⚠️ Pets with pre existing health conditions such as lung or heart problems

𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞

🟠 Panting
🟠 Restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade or water
🟠 Drooling/dribbling
🟠 Red gums or tongue
🟠 Increased heart rate
🟠 vomiting or diarrhoea

𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞

🔴 Lethargy
🔴 Confusion
🔴 Weakness or collapse
🔴 Vomiting or diarrhoea that contains blood
🔴 Seizures
🔴 Death

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞

💚Call your vets and start cooling immediately before transporting to the vets.
💚 Take your pets somewhere shaded and cool 😎, ideally somewhere ventilated or use a fan.
💚 Offer small amounts of cool water to drink.
💚 Slowly poor cool water over their body (careful around the head) and combine this with air movements from a breeze or fan.
💚 Do not use wet towels to cover your dog as this can trap in heat. However they can be used wet for your dog to stand on.
💚 Even if your pet seems ok it’s important to have them checked at the vet’s, as more serious signs of heatstroke may not present immediately.

𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞

☀️ Make sure your pet always has access to shaded and cool areas (indoors and outdoors).
☀️ Restrict or don’t exercise your dogs on hot days. Dogs die on hot days but they don’t die from missing a walk!!
☀️ If exercising your dog do it early in the morning or late in the evening.
☀️ Consider using a harness, so their airways don’t get compressed when pulling.
☀️ Pack a water bottle for your dog and offer small amounts.
☀️ Avoid pavements as can burn their paws when hot.
☀️ Never leave pets in cars or hot rooms (e.g conservatories).
☀️ Avoid travelling with your dog in the car when it’s hot.
☀️ Keep your dog a healthy weight.
☀️ Keep up with groom appointments to help keep their coat cool.
☀️ Ensure they always have drinking water available.
