Happy National Pigeon Day! 🕊️

🤍 Today, we celebrate one of the world's most misunderstood birds. Pigeons have been loyal companions to humans for thousands of years.

✨️ Pigeons are remarkably intelligent and hardy birds, capable of recognising individual human faces, navigating hundreds of miles and becoming war heroes.

🖤 While pigeons have served humanity faithfully for centuries, life can be incredibly challenging for them in the wild today.

🏨 We care for hundreds of pigeons each year. Many arrive due to nest disturbances, diseases, car interactions, road traffic collisions, targeted cruelty or natural predation.

🐥🐤 These 2 little young pigeons are recovering in our care after their nest was destroyed and they were found alone on the ground. They are doing well and kept in good company with our other young pigeons.

🤩 Today let's show some love and appreciation to our beloved humble pigeons.

📖 The first week of June...
Our little patient was feeling a bit distressed. 😟 One eye seemed uncomfortable, red, and oh-so-itchy! 👀❤️
Luckily, Mum is always attentive and decided it was time for a visit to VetsCarePets to find out what was going on.
🐶 Patient’s thoughts:
“Everything in this consult room feels so strange... so many smells to investigate! Wait... WHAT?! What’s that green stuff you’re putting in my eye?! 😳”
✨ Surprise diagnosis: A corneal ulcer!
After a thorough examination, treatment was started straight away, and our brave patient is now well on the road to recovery. 💚
📚 A little learning moment:
Corneal ulcers are actually quite common in dogs and are often caused by trauma—something as simple as a scratch from play, a branch, or rubbing the eye. Ulcers can vary in severity and healing time depending on the patient’s age, breed, and overall health.
⚠️ If your dog is squinting, keeping an eye closed, rubbing at it, or you notice redness, don’t wait. Eye problems can worsen quickly, and early treatment gives the best chance for a smooth recovery.
🐾 When it comes to eyes, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

🐀❤️ Let me tell you a story... ❤️🐀
It’s 2016.
I’m at university and I have two best friends: Thunder and Jimmy. Two gorgeous grey Dumbo rats. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but definitely mine. 😍
I’m getting ready to head to lectures when the doorbell starts singing its ridiculously annoying tune.
I open the door.
“Hi, I’m Eva. Are you here to see Mel?”
My roommate’s friend smiles... then suddenly freezes.
His eyes get bigger.
He points.
“You... you have something in your sleeve!”
I look down.
A little grey nose appears.
Then some whiskers.
Then a whole rat. 😂
“Oh, yes. This is Thunder.”
The poor guy physically steps backwards.
“For sure, these are my pet rats,” I reply, as if this is the most normal thing in the world.
The look on his face is priceless.
I’m pretty sure I scare him for life. To this day, he probably tells people about the crazy rat girl who keeps rodents hidden in her clothes. 🤣
The funny thing is, while rats aren’t everyone’s first choice of pet, they are intelligent, affectionate, mischievous little characters who completely steal your heart.
And here at VetsCarePets, we love them just as much as we love dogs and cats. 🐾
That’s why we offer capped-price consultations and surgeries for our small furry friends, because every pet—big or small—deserves great veterinary care.
So here’s to Thunder, Jimmy, and all the little “not everyone’s cup of tea” pets that make life so much more interesting. ❤️🐀

🐱⚠️ TICK ALERT FOR PET PARENTS! ⚠️🐱
This gorgeous kitty came in for a routine vaccination, but we also discovered some unwelcome hitchhikers... TICKS! 🕷️
With the warmer weather, ticks are becoming much more common and can pose serious health risks to both pets and people. Even indoor cats can be at risk if ticks are brought into the home on clothing, shoes, or other pets.
✅ Check your pets regularly, especially around the ears, neck, underarms, and between the toes.
✅ Keep parasite prevention up to date.
✅ Contact your vet if you find a tick or notice any unusual symptoms.
A quick check today could prevent a much bigger problem tomorrow!
🙏 Thank you to this pet’s family for allowing us to share this important reminder and help raise awareness.
Please share this post to help spread the word and keep our furry friends safe this tick season! 🐾💚

What a fantastic day in the community!

Today, we mixed things up in the best way possible — a veterinary ambulance on site and a dentist sharing tips on healthy teeth with the local kids. You could say it was a day dedicated to keeping both tails wagging and smiles shining! 🦷✨

The children had a great time learning about dental care, asking lots of questions, and enjoying the activities. We may not have convinced everyone to love brushing their teeth just yet, but we definitely made it more fun! 😄

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the day possible. Seeing so many happy faces, curious minds, and bright smiles reminded us why community events like these matter so much.

Here’s to healthier teeth, happier kids, and maybe a few future dentists and veterinarians in the making! 🐶🦷❤️

Over 80% of all our calls during May this year were regarding dogs, and can you guess which breeds are the biggest culprits? Take a look for yourself...
