1. The Microchip Checklist: Up-to-Date Details Save Lives 🗓️
A microchip is completely useless if it links back to an old phone number or a previous address. Vets and rescue centres scan lost pets every day, only to find dead ends because the database details are expired.
• Action Step: Make it a habit to log into your DEFRA-approved database (like PetLog, PETtrac, or Chipworks) at least once a year—or every time you move or change numbers—to verify your contact information.
• The Law: Microchipping is legally mandatory for all dogs (by 8 weeks of age) and all cats in England. Failing to chip them or keep your details updated can result in a hefty fine.
2. The Collar Tag Law: It’s Not Optional! 🏷️
Even if your dog is microchipped, they must wear a collar and ID tag whenever they are in a public place. This is a strict legal requirement under the Control of Dogs Order 1992.
• What MUST be on the tag: The owner’s real name and full address (including postcode).
• What you SHOULD add: A current mobile phone number so a finder can call you instantly.
• What you should LEAVE OFF: Your dog’s name. Leaving it off helps protect them from opportunistic thieves who might use their name to lure them away.
