Creating light and dark areas in an aquascape is important for your scape and the fish. Darker areas makes the aquascape seem more detailed and intriguing whilst giving somewhere for the fish to retreat to. Having open areas ensures the fish have ample swimming room which is especially important for schooling fish such as tetras.

Some plants such as cryptocoryne and anubias thrive in lower light conditions. Some fish such as kuhli loaches are shy fish and spend a lot of time hiding away so giving areas to retreat to is important. Keep in mind your stocking plans before you setup your aquascape.
