6 things that to pay attention to that will help reactive dogs have low-stress walks through the neighborhood or at the park:

1️⃣ Jingling dog tags - I listen for this to help manage my distance from other dogs. It also helps me know which houses have dogs or if a dog is coming down the street.

2️⃣ Listen for garage doors opening up ahead or behind you - these are one of the things that often tell me a trigger is about to happen. It can help you moderate distance between you and people, dogs, families, scary cars, and a host of other “people just living their lives” triggers.

3️⃣ The sounds of kids playing - For many reactive dogs, kids are alone are scary! So I listen for kids playing on the street or at the park. If I can hear them, it tells me to watch out for other things like a stray ball bouncing our way.

4️⃣ Dogs on property signs - I don't know about you but I REALLY appreciate these signs. When I see it, I can help my dog cross the street or hurry past the house. This also helps the families in the house too!

5️⃣ Notice the yards where dogs hang out - This tip is for if you're walking in a location regularly. Learn which yards tend to have dogs during walking times. Just like the previous tip, I'll make an extra effort to cross the street.

6️⃣ Cars pulling into driveways or parking on the street - Because you never know what is going to come out of the car!

Leash reactivity is one of our most common cases. If you are struggling, reach out to our team for support: https://petharmonytraining.com/services/clients/

"I swear he wasn't like this yesterday."

The dog that's grabbing clothes, barking at everything, jumping and squealing or struggling to listen.

I know it feels like it happened overnight.
What if it didn’t?

What catches people out is that dogs don't reset to zero after a sleep.

Excitement can carry over, long after the ball has been put away.
Frustration can carry over, even when there's no obvious cause.

A busy weekend gets added to the counter too.
Sometimes even a busy week.

We don't want to stop the fun.
We see them happy.
Engaged and loving the intensity.
Wanting to interact over and over again.

So we keep saying yes.

We excuse it.
"He's just a teenager."
"She gets mouthy when she's happy."
But eventually we can end up with a problem that excitement won't solve.

Because we've added more onto a dog who was already carrying the days before.
And the days before that.

That's why over-arousal can be so difficult to spot.

It disguises itself as fun.

As excitement.

As "the best day ever."
And it does that day after day.
Week after week.

And then we add more to “tire them out”.

The trouble is that sometimes the last thing an over aroused dog needs,
is more.

No sign of cat #5 today. I hope he's enjoying the sun as much as his food, he eats everything. 😋😂👍🐈‍⬛
