PLEASE GIVE A LONG-LEGGED BEAUTY A CHANCE!
Too many lurcher-type dogs are found as strays or abandoned, often after being used in illegal hunting such as hare coursing and lamping.🥺 These gentle, sensitive dogs deserve safety, kindness and a second chance.💕
FACT: Give a Lurcher (which is actually a greyhound cross) understanding and patience, and you may gain one of the most loyal companions imaginable.
With patience, structure and love, these beautiful dogs can blossom at home and become deeply devoted family members. Adoption does not just transform their lives — it can bring warmth, joy and unforgettable companionship into yours.🥰
LIFESPAN & HEALTH: Lurchers can live around 12–15 years, depending on diet and exercise. As athletic dogs with high metabolisms, they need good nutrition.
They may eat very quickly after exercise, which can cause bloating or vomiting, so avoid feeding within an hour before or after activity. A slow-feeding bowl or snuffle mat can help. Despite their energy, Lurchers have relatively few joint or muscle issues, although arthritis can develop in later life.
WAYS TO CHANNEL THEIR ENERGY: A misconception is that Lurchers need lots and lots of exercise, when in fact 1-2 hours per day is enough. A secure paddock is a wonderful way to build confidence and bond with your Lurcher, giving them safe space to run, play and enjoy their zoomies. Once their body and mind are satisfied, many are happiest curled up beside you for a long snooze. They may love a run, but lurchers are also famous couch potatoes.
Older Lurchers usually enjoy gentle walks, steady routines and plenty of time to sniff, explore and be by your side.
UNDERSTANDING AFFECTION: Some Lurchers may not be used to regular human affection, so their trust is especially precious. They may be overexcited, shy or unsure at first, but by letting them set the pace and respecting their boundaries, you can help them feel safe.
Give them a quiet place to rest, and many will soon choose to come to you for fuss, cuddles and companionship when they are ready.😍
