💚Spot's Caesarean Section💚
On Saturday 8th of August, we helped Spot bring her puppies into the world 🌍
Spot had presented to our clinic overnight for dystocia (difficulty giving birth) she had managed to pass one puppy naturally, and then stopped giving birth. Spot was given oxytocin to help stimulate the uterus to contract, and the owners decided to take her home where she is more settled, unfortunately this did not work and Spot was brought back to the clinic in the morning 👩‍⚕️

Following an examination and a quick scan of the puppies heartbeats revealed that the puppies were in distress, their heartbeat rates were very slow and only 2 puppies heartbeats could be seen, making us think the worst ☹️

Spot's owners allowed us to rush her to surgery to hopefully remove the puppies safely and make an attempt to revive them.
Our amazing vet, Ioana performed the surgery and brilliant RVN Julia monitored the anaesthetic. RVN Maddie and SVN Amber were on standby ready to revive the puppies once they were extracted from the uterus 💚

We are happy to say that all the puppies survived, some puppies had very slow heartbeats at first of 30-40bpm, after lots of nursing intervention, all puppies were soon squeaking, latching onto mum and bright 🥰

Responsible breeding is the most important thing here, Spot's owners understood the gravity of the situation and got her the surgery she needed. When you are thinking of breeding a pet, please make sure you have thought about the possibility of a caesarian section, as this can happen to any breed 🐶

We want to introduce everyone to, Zebedee 🤍🖤
Zebedee, first presented to our Spennymoor branch where it was recorded that he had a very high temperature of 41 degrees celcius, typically anything over 39.2 is considered pyrexic (high temperature) 🥵
Despite being a young kitten, Zebedee was flat, did not want to eat and was very poorly. Using a range of in-house diagnostic testing we revealed a few things:
🧪 He tested negative on the in-house screening for infectious diseases
🧪 His haematology showed he had low white blood cells, and was slightly anaemic
🧪 His biochemistry was consistent with the negative infectious disease panel show normal proteins
Our wonderful nursing team utilised a range of nursing methods to get his temperature down, including fans, air conditioning, ice packs, maintaining intravenous fluid therapy and offering cold drinking water. They consistently monitored his temperature and worked together with the veterinary surgeon to create plans to reduce his temperature and get him eating again 👩‍⚕️

We are very happy to say that, Zebedee made a full recovery! Once we managed to get on top of his temperature and added in an appetite stimulant, he began eating small amounts, and gradually returned to his normal behaviour 🥰

Zebedee's care was a huge team effort, thank you to his wonderful owners for trusting us to care for him and get him back to his usual self! 💚

‼️ HEATSTROKE WARNING ‼️
This week’s temperatures are meant to be in the 25-30 degree range; this is too hot for a walk.

We unfortunately have had multiple fatal cases of heatstroke last year, they are preventable losses, your pet will not die from not going on a walk, but they may from going on a walk in this heat. PLEASE keep your pets inside.

If your pet is exposed to the heat, cool them down as soon as possible using the following techniques:
💧 Use cold water
💧 Give them a cold shower
💧 Focus cooling their sweat gland areas: ears & paws
💧 Plenty of water to drink

DO NOT
❌ Wrap towels over your pet, this traps in the heat and will exacerbate the symptoms
❌ Use lukewarm water at first, just use cold water
❌ Do not think a paddling pool is enough to keep them cool

If you think your pet is suffering from heatstroke you must get them to a vet immediately, do not wait 🚑

This goes without saying, if you see a pet in a car in this heat please contact the police as they will be able to handle the matter, we cannot unfortunately 👮

Please spread this information to your family and friends, talk about it with family members who may not have social media as simple information like this can save lives 🐾
