Can introducing orthotic support early on change the long-term picture for canine carpal osteoarthritis? 🦴

Meet Bernie, a 1-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog who presented with intermittent forelimb lameness and early-stage carpal OA.

Instead of waiting for the condition to progress or completely immobilise the joint, his team introduced a custom WIMBA carpal orthosis. The goal was simple: control excessive, painful hyperextension while actively preserving functional movement.

Just 5 months into his tailored rehab plan, Bernie’s progress shows what is possible:
➡️ Reduced Inflammation: Significant decrease in local soft tissue swelling.
➡️ Zero Meds Needed: Fully managed without daily pharmaceutical pain relief.
➡️ Restored Mobility: Longer, comfortable walks and a complete return to normal daily activity.

Orthotics shouldn't just be considered a 'last resort' for late-stage disease. When used early as part of a multimodal plan, they can actively protect joint stability and keep young, active dogs moving safely.

Elliott has been having a course of hydrotherapy to help build some muscle for his luxating patella. He started off very nervous of the water but we soon won him over 😃
