Today this little cat was found dumped in Ward End Park B8.
As you can see the carrier is filthy.
A kind family took the cat to the local vets where the cat was examined and due to the cat’s condition ( which cannot be seen fully from just a pic ) he was euthanised under welfare grounds.
Now, I’ve only just seen this post, and I’m very familiar with the practice he was taken too.
The comments on the post are completely uneducated and totally uncalled for.
Firstly lots of people ignore these animals in distress so I’d like to say a huge thank you to the people that ensured this cat didn’t die alone in a dirty old carrier
Some vets are extremely kind to stray cats - and yes they have a duty of care to treat for emergency relief.
However so many are taking in cats, treating them, performing big surgeries to give the cats a chance.
Nurses are taking home new born kittens to hand rear them. And then doing a full time job the next day.
Vets are doing ops in their own time FOC just to give cats an extra chance.
Yes vets are a business - however lots are very compassionate people who care deeply.
However , there isn’t endless kennel space to hold endless stray cats - and like rescues vets have to prioritise.
They cannot possibly take every single cat brought in.
My old practice used to use the iso pen for strays and holding kittens - my manager had to hire an extra nurse because the cleaning of the kennels of a morning was eating into op time - the nurse didn’t have time to sort the medications for the ops as she was always so busy administering meds, cleaning , bathing the strays in the iso block.
This then meant no breaks , because surgeries would run over and afternoon appointments would be waiting and the vet and nurse still in theatre.
The vet wasn’t paid to keep, feed and treat the strays - he did it because he’s a good human !!
THERE IS NO MORE ROOM.
stop blaming vets and rescues
We cannot magic space.
We cannot give every single animal on deaths door a chance - where are we keeping them? Who is funding them? Who has isolations free? Who has the time? Who is homing them ?
Today this vet practice was basically slaughtered on the post for putting this cat to sleep.
A photo doesn’t show the severity of an illness - it doesn’t show anaemia, it doesn’t show heart issues, it doesn’t show internal organs shutting down , it doesn’t show bloods, it didn’t show the extent of internal issues.
What the photo does show is a cat who has been dumped by their sh*tty owner and now being kindly given some dignity by being humanly PTS by a vet who does care.
Please people, think before you speak.
Stop blaming everyone else.
A vet isn’t a rescue - a vet isn’t a rehoming centre
They have sick animals to treat aswell as every stray they are called about.
Every practice I know does their bit ( yes some aren’t so helpful I know that too but don’t tar all with the same brush ) - and if that means putting a cat to sleep to relieve suffering then I’d much rather that , than them dying a horrible death on the street.
