I’m a 2 year old tabby and white beauty, spayed, microchipped, and fully prepared to grace your home with my magnificence. While I might act a little shy at first, don’t be fooled—it’s just a strategic delay to make sure you’re worthy of my affection. 📦 Getting Ready for Adoption Day! 🐾

Bringing a new rescue cat home is so exciting! To help you and your new feline companion get off to the smoothest possible start, it helps to get things set up and know what to expect before they arrive.

Here is your checklist and guide to preparing for the big day:

1. Set Up Their "Home Base" (Before They Arrive)
To help your cat feel secure from the moment they step out of their carrier, set up a smaller, quiet space ahead of time—such as a spare bedroom or a calm home office.
• Giving them a dedicated "home base" prevents them from feeling overwhelmed by the size of the whole house.
• Make sure their litter tray, water, and food bowls are set up away from each other, and provide a cosy hiding spot (like a covered cat bed or a box with a blanket over it).
• Once your cat is confident and relaxed in that room, you can gradually allow them to explore the rest of the home at their own pace.

2. Keep the "Rule of Three" in Mind
Knowing what to expect during those first few weeks will help you stay patient and relaxed:
• 3 Days: Time to decompress, adjust to new sounds, and stop feeling like they are in immediate danger. Many cats will spend most of this time hiding.
• 3 Weeks: Time to learn the household routine, figure out when mealtimes happen, and start showing their true personality.
• 3 Months: Time to feel completely "at home" and fully bonded with their new family.

3. Prepare for "Low Pressure" Interaction
• Don't Pursue: Do not attempt to pull your cat out from under furniture or force cuddles right away. If they are hiding, they are "self-soothing." Let them come to you on their terms.
• The "Slow Blink": When you do make eye contact, blink slowly and look away. In cat language, this is the ultimate compliment: "I am not a threat; I trust you."
• Passive Bonding: Spend time sitting on the floor in their room reading a book or scrolling on your phone. This allows the cat to get used to your presence and scent without the pressure of direct interaction.

4. Stock Up on Tempting Foods
• The "Smelly" Stuff: Travel and stress can temporarily dull a cat's appetite and sense of smell. Having warmed-up wet food, plain boiled chicken, or "Lick-e-Lix" treats on hand will help tempt them to eat.
• Night Owls: Remember that most newly arrived cats won't eat while people are watching them. Don't panic if the bowl looks untouched during the day—just leave food out overnight and check it in the morning.

5. Scent Swapping & Comfort
• Leave a piece of your worn clothing (like a clean, recently worn T-shirt) near their bed or resting spot so they can safely associate your scent with comfort from day one.

Essential Adoption Requirements for Cats (Non-Negotiable) 🚨
Petsearch Adoptions

Please read these requirements carefully before you apply. As an all-volunteer organisation with limited time, we must prioritise applications that meet our criteria. If you do not meet these standards, please do not apply. This helps us spend our time wisely and ultimately helps the cats find their forever homes faster.

Cat Housing and Environment
• Outdoor Access: If you plan for the cat to go outdoors, your home must not be near busy or main roads. We prefer indoor-only homes or homes with a secure catio or cat-proof fencing. We only approve outdoor access in quiet areas away from heavy traffic.
• Home Checks: All applications are subject to a thorough home and background check before an adoption is approved.

Resident Pet Requirements
• Neutering: All resident pets must be neutered, except in cases of a valid medical exemption. We will require veterinary proof of this (or the exemption) during the home check.
• Vaccinations for Resident Cats:
• Outdoor Access: All existing cats that have outdoor access must be fully vaccinated, unless they have a medical exemption.
• Indoor Only: While not strictly mandatory for indoor-only resident cats, we strongly advise they be vaccinated. Preference will be given to homes where existing indoor cats are already vaccinated.

Important Final Note
These requirements are non-negotiable. Applying when you do not meet the criteria wastes valuable volunteer time that could be spent processing approved applications.
