What is chronic progressive lymphedema (CPL)⁉️

πŸ“CPL is a debilitating condition caused by a buildup of lymph fluid in the lower legs that result in progressive swelling with associated skin folds, nodules and ulcerations

πŸ“It has been described in Shires, Clydesdales, Belgian draft horses, Gypsy Vanners, English cobs, German draft horse breeds, Friesians, and Percherons.

πŸ“The disease starts at an early age and progresses throughout the life of affected horses, often resulting in disfigurement and lameness.

πŸ“It can result in severe disability, secondary infections and premature death.

πŸ“Chronic progressive lymphedema is a systemic disease of the lymphatic system in which the skin lesions on the lower limbs occur secondarily due to poor lymphatic drainage and tissue perfusion.

We had a lot of interest in our post last week on feather vs no feather so we thought we should share some information on the skin conditions that can be masked by thick feathers

Clipping foals!!!

Why would you??

I'll tell you why!

Sometimes in the spring foal coats are a little behind in shedding.
This can make them too warm and sweaty, and if this happens, a foal coat can very quickly become matted!
In addition to this, all that warm floof combined with a foals delicate immune system makes them quite prone to lice and all the troubles that come with that.

Matts in a foal coat will literally spring up out of nowhere. You could leave them to shed out, but if that's your decision then you will be limited in being able to handle your new baby, because grooming will be uncomfortable for them, and trying to brush them out can lead to bruising of the skin which is obviously uncomfortable.
Cutting matts out with scissors is dangerous because they're often very close to a babies paper thin skin, and one wrong move can easily cause an accident!

So please, if you have a cute lil foalie, don't let anyone tell you they're too young to clip. If they're overheating or starting to matt up, get a professional in and give the little one a helping hand ❀️

Little Jager had a very dense thick coat with lots of matting. He will now be feeling much more comfortable. His owner can now more effectively treat his little crawly passengers and monitor his weight gain visually. What a good little lad he was 😍🐴

A few photos of Deano after his full clip including legs and face off (and a couple of pics to show before). He was very nervous so had some sedation from the vet to safely clip his legs. He is looking super smart πŸ΄πŸ™‚βœ‚οΈ
