If you brought home a puppy or kitten over the summer, it's worth double-checking their primary vaccination course was fully completed — not just started. Missing a follow-up dose in the series can mean your pet isn't as protected as you think, even if the first jab is done.

It's an easy thing to lose track of amid the busyness of a new pet settling in, especially if you switched vets or the timing slipped.

Message us with your pet's details and we can quickly check what's on record and confirm whether anything's still outstanding.

Before the colder months properly arrive, it's worth a quick check of your pet's weight and coat condition. A slightly heavier coat is normal and helpful for warmth, but it can also disguise weight gain that's crept on gradually — a thicker coat makes ribs and waistline harder to feel and see.

Run your hands gently along your pet's sides: you should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard, and see a waist when viewed from above. If it's harder to tell than usual, a quick weight check with us takes the guesswork out of it before winter's reduced exercise habits set in.

Not every appointment needs to be with a vet. Our qualified nurses run dedicated clinics for the smaller jobs — nail clips, weight checks, a**l gland checks and general advice — quick, straightforward appointments that fit easily into a busy autumn week.

Overgrown nails can affect how your pet walks and, left too long, can curl round and grow into the paw pad, so it's worth staying on top of regularly, especially for older or less active pets who naturally wear their nails down less on muddier, softer ground.

Book a nurse clinic appointment at either practice — no referral needed, just book directly.

With wetter walks becoming the norm, how you dry your pet off afterwards matters more than you might think. Fur left damp for too long — especially in thick-coated or long-haired breeds — can trap moisture against the skin and lead to warm, itchy 'hot spots' that are uncomfortable and can become infected.

A thorough towel dry focusing on the belly, legs, ears and any skin folds, followed by allowing fur to fully air dry rather than staying damp under a coat, makes a real difference. A dog coat is useful for keeping rain off, but only if it's removed and everything underneath is properly dried afterwards.

Noticed any red, sore, or unusually smelly patches of skin? Worth getting checked rather than left to settle on its own.

This week marks National Adoption Week, a good moment to talk about what responsible adoption looks like — whatever stage of the process you're at.

A rescue or rehomed pet often comes with an unknown history, so patience in the first few weeks matters enormously: a quiet, consistent routine, realistic expectations around settling-in time, and no rush to introduce them to every friend and family member at once.

If you've recently adopted, or are considering it, getting your new pet registered with us early means we can build a clear picture of their health and flag anything worth knowing from day one.

If you're planning to board your pet over the festive season, most kennels and catteries require an up-to-date vaccination record, including kennel cough cover for dogs — and slots for both boarding and vaccination appointments fill up fast as winter approaches.

Now's a sensible time to check your pet's vaccination record with us and get anything due booked in, well before the pre-Christmas rush.

Not sure when your pet's last booster was? Message us and we'll check their record and get an appointment booked in.

15/10/2026

As routines pick back up after the summer — more boarding, grooming appointments, training classes and dog-park socialising — it's worth knowing the signs of kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection that spreads easily wherever dogs mix.

The classic sign is a harsh, honking cough, sometimes followed by retching, in an otherwise bright and active dog. It's rarely serious in healthy adult dogs but spreads fast, so keeping a coughing dog away from other dogs (and letting boarding kennels or groomers know in advance) helps contain it.

If your dog develops a persistent cough, get in touch — most cases settle with rest, but it's worth ruling out anything more serious.

14/10/2026

If you're building a bonfire pile ahead of the 5th, it's worth knowing that log and leaf piles are exactly the kind of spot hedgehogs choose to nest in for winter. A pile built days or weeks in advance can easily become a hedgehog's home without you realising.

The safest approach: build your bonfire on the day it will be lit rather than in advance, or if it's already built, carefully move it to a new spot immediately before lighting and check thoroughly with a torch (never a fork or spade) for any sheltering wildlife.

A few minutes of checking protects far more than just your own pets this time of year.

Dental disease is one of the most common — and most preventable — health issues we see, and it doesn't take a holiday. Both our Billericay and Wickford practices offer full dental assessments, scale and polish treatments, and extractions where needed, carried out on-site by our experienced team.

A dental check is quick to arrange and gives you a clear picture of your pet's oral health, along with a plan if any treatment is needed — much easier to sort now than once winter appointment slots fill up.

If it's been a while since your pet's teeth were properly checked, now's a great time to book one in.

12/10/2026

Bonfire Night is still a few weeks away, but if your pet struggles with fireworks, now is genuinely the best time to start preparing — not the afternoon of the 5th.

A few things worth doing early: identify (or set up) a safe den space your pet already feels comfortable in, consider calming aids or pheromone diffusers that need a few weeks to build up effect, and if noise anxiety is severe, book a chat with us now so there's time to put a proper plan in place before the fireworks start.

A little preparation in October makes a real difference come November.
