Worried about road safety, or finding suitable places for your dog to exercise in the city? You’re not alone 🐶

We spoke to dog owners across London to find out what concerns them most about life in the capital and here’s what they told us.

Every owner has their own worries, but whatever’s on your mind, your local Medivet is here to help 💙

Survey results based on a Censuswide survey of 1,002 London dog owners aged 18+.

UPDATE: he has now been reunited with his owners!

Hi all, we have had a dog handed into us - Black and Brindle, with grey hairs down his legs and around his muzzle, Male - entire, Staffordshire bull terrier, who we think is about 7+ years.
He unfortunately does not have a chip. He was found near London Road and Church Street in Biggleswade. The member of the public who handed him into us advised that he was clipped by a car, so we are keeping a very close eye on him at present.
Please get in touch if you know who he belongs to.
Thanks!

Do you remember the “business end” photo we quizzed you about back in April? This is Douglas who spent the day with us for an A**l Sacculectomy - removal of the a**l sacs (colloquially known as a**l glands)! The a**l sacs are little pouches on the inside of the bottom that produce a scented secretion that helps dogs to identify other dogs and mark their territories!

Douglas was regularly struggling with a sore bottom because he was unable to completely empty his a**l sacs when passing stools. This affects many dogs and can cause symptoms such as scooting, licking or chewing around the rear, straining to pass stools, or spinning around to look at the bottom. Typically, overfilling of the a**l sacs can result in sac irritation, impaction or infection which can cause pain, stress and illness to our beloved pets.

To help prevent these issues, our nurses and vets routinely express the a**l sacs in many of our canine patients (and some of our feline patients too!) - this is achieved during a short appointment. The team may also advise upon other lifestyle and dietary changes to help.

However, when regular expression is not keeping your pets sufficiently happy and healthy, our vets may recommend removal of the sacs under general anaesthesia.

Douglas recovered very well from his procedure and now has one less thing to worry about in his day-to-day doggy life!

It’s Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month!

Without our incredible nurses, Medivet Biggleswade would simply cease to function.

Cara, Aleysha and Nicole are the wheels that keep the train moving; from ensuring that your pets are comfortable and cared for during their visit, to performing skilled procedures and providing you with current and evidence-based advice, Vet Nurses are very impressive individuals! A day in the life of a Veterinary Nurse is challenging, rewarding, and full of surprises so we want to take this opportunity to show our HUGE appreciation for our nurses’ hard work and care.

We might be biased, but our Veterinary Nurses are the best around!

Meet The Team Tuesday!

First up for our MTTT is our fantastic Head Nurse, Cara!

Cara has been at Medivet Biggleswade since 2020 and has been our Head Veterinary Nurse since January 2025. Alongside caring for your pets, she has a particular interest in wildlife and exotics species and, as such, plans to complete advanced training in these areas in the near future. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that Cara has a plethora of animals at home including a snake, chickens, cats and a dog!

At present, Cara is brushing up on her “Point Of Care” ultrasound skills - an imaging procedure designed to give us a rapid overview of the health of your pet’s tummy and chest. This allows our Vets to guide diagnostic and treatment plans to provide tailored veterinary care to each of our lovely patients.

Day to day, you’ll find Cara in nurse consultations (e.g. completing your pet’s health checks, nail clips, a**l sac expressions and post-operative checks), assisting in surgeries or monitoring anaesthesia, or processing your insurance claims. There’s no end to her talents!

Thank you for all of your hard work and team spirit, Cara!

On this years Earth Day, we just wanted to make a little post about how here at Medivet Biggleswade we try to be a sustainable practice.
As well as caring for all our lovely patients and clients we also do our best to help care for the planet too. 🌍🌱

Here are some examples:
♻️We recycle as much as we can, even carry out waste surveys to ensure everyone is doing their part!
♻️We use a coffee pod recycling scheme - we get through a lot of coffee! ☕️
♻️We offer email copies of receipts/invoices/history as much as possible to help reduce paper usage 🌳
♻️All of our chemicals for cleaning are made up to correct dilution rates and disposed of safely to help protect the water ways 🏞️
♻️We use low flow anaesthesia techniques to help reduce waste gases
♻️We take in donations of food and bedding for local animal charities so we can help our clients to help other animals too 🐈🦮
♻️We create reusable resources in practice to help reduce our paper wastage
♻️Our Charity partnership the Wilderness Foundation have programmes which reclaim, re-wild and restore natural habitats

And no doubt you have seen us all in practice with our giant reusable water bottles!
