Is there anything more fun than a morning spent spanieling?
This little guy completed his ecollar training course this morning and is our third dog this week alone to successfully finish the programme and earn the freedom to be safely back off lead.
Like many spaniels, his biggest challenge was distracted recall around wildlife. Once he locked onto prey, he was gone, head down, into cover, and completely committed to the chase, with little regard for what his owner had to say about it.
Fast forward to today, and the transformation has been incredible.
At the conclusion of his course, we saw perfect decision making around prey animals.
Not only did he choose not to chase when given the opportunity, but later in the session he completely ignored them altogether.
His recall was also 100% on the money, returning every single time he was called regardless of distractions, excitement, or competing motivators.
We should not be restricting a dog's natural instincts, but giving owners the tools to safely manage them and giving dogs the understanding to make better choices when it matters.
The goal isn't to stop a spaniel being a spaniel. It's to create the reliability and communication needed for them to enjoy that freedom safely.
Now he's free to enjoy all the spaniel things he was born to do, with the confidence that his owners can call him back when they need to.
Spaniels are undoubtedly one of our favourite breeds to work with. They're intelligent, driven, enthusiastic, and often wonderfully chaotic. Watching them go from disappearing over the horizon at the sight of wildlife to making calm, thoughtful decisions around those same distractions never gets old.
