This weekend has been another busy one for me and my two Cairns.
On Saturday we went to a Heel Work To Music training show run by Nicci Hindson and Lucy Heath and her helpers. It was a great day for me as it highlighted errors in my working Ava in the show ring as well as solutions to help correct these errors! What I hadn't realised is that Ava has trained me to give her treats to make her do as I ask when she doesn't do as I ask. Now I have to wait for her to do what I ask and then reward so could take time! So here goes!!! Yogi has always been terrified by going into Rugby Training Barn and yesterday I managed to get him through the door and to do a bit of training while in the hall, just give paw and a twist and turn. Certainly a lot of treats were used to help make his experience in the barn feel like a pleasant experience for him! Such a brilliant achievement for him so may be next time we go he will be much more relaxed! Then today, Sunday The Fair Weather DTC held a Heel Work To Music 2 hour workshop. Thankfully the village hall was cool enough for training as I am the Instructor, it was important the dogs did not over heat. So we did more teaching using the dogs brains rather than lots of exercise!. Teaching the dogs to walk beside the handler on both the right hand side as well as the left hand side, to teach them to go through the handlers legs to change sides, to go around a prop or stick both ways, teaching to dog to look forward, etc all good practice for each dog and handler. I think the dogs went home tired and happy! The rest of the afternoon was cancelled as much to hot to teach trailing.

I have been asked to share this appeal.

This six-month-old Dutch Herder urgently needs a suitable home. He is currently in emergency foster care, but unless a home can be found, he faces being put to sleep this Friday, the 7th August 2026.

This would be a tragic waste of a fit, healthy and very young dog.

I do not have any further information, so please do not message me with questions, as I probably will not be able to answer them.

Dutch Herders are intelligent, active working dogs, so he will need an experienced and suitable home with someone who understands the breed and its needs.

We still .have places on this workshop if you wanted to come and try Trailing/Mantrailing. You do not need to have done any but if you have done mantrialing why not try it in a different place. We do have shade so dogs won't over heat.

Trailing and Tracking is suitable for every dog — young or old, any breed. Every dog can do it, even those who are nervous or reactive as each dog is worked with no other dogs around.
Trailing helps build confidence, engages their natural instincts, gives them a real mental workout, and burns plenty of energy — all while being great fun for both of you!
We work in rural and unban places so helping your dog to work in so many environments.

This HTM workshop on Sunday is not just for adults! Now the holidays have started and parents are looking for things to do with their children, why not book the family dog in for this Trick & Treat 2 hour workshop on Sunday morning. We do still have a couple of places left. This 2 hour workshop will help to train your dog in a fun way but it will give your children some responsibility for training their dog. Just think what Gran or Grandad would say when they see the tricks the grandchildren have taught their dog?
Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

It’s never “just a sniff”.
It looks quick and meaningless to us. Not to them.

That moment gives them information you can’t see.
Who this dog is.
If they’ve met before.
How old they are.
What state they’re in right now.
Whether something feels a little bit “off”

Even health and hormones come into it.

Now the bit that’s missed, not every dog allows that information to be shared.

Tail position, posture, movement.
That can decide whether access is given or “denied” and only some will do this or allow it to be done.
I’m not a fan of turning a dog around to “present the rear” either. If they do it naturally, great, if they don’t, no biggie.
Some dogs just do not get their noses in that position at all.

For the ones that do?
It’s not about letting every dog sniff every dog.
But it is about understanding what’s actually happening in that moment.

And that’s a lot!

What a fantastic day at the Best Paws Rally Show for our club!
Kieron and Tiko had an incredible performance, winning the Rally Level 2 class with an Excellent pass, which means they now move up to Level 3! They’d already achieved Excellent passes in their Level 1 classes, earning their progression to Level 2—so this team has been on a real roll.
But they didn’t stop there. For the first time, Kieron and Tiko entered the Level 3 class today, taking on a much more challenging course—off lead, no less.
And as if that wasn’t impressive enough, they went and won 2nd placing in Level 3 as well!

Such a proud Rally Instructor!! Well done Kieron and Tiko!
