At Bicester Vets we pride ourselves on caring for your pets as we would care for our own. We have long opening hours for your convenience & provide our own 24 hour emergency vet should you require assistance out of hours. What's more the service is conveniently based at our own practice so there's no need to drive to an unfamiliar Emergency Centre. We also have 24 hour on-site nursing care as standard for our hospitalised patients.

What’s the difference between a veterinary practice and a veterinary hospital, and what does this mean for your pet?

But here's the truth...

Most dogs who enjoy muddy walks will never develop Alabama Rot, and we don't actually know the exact cause of the disease. That means avoiding every puddle isn't a guarantee, and it shouldn't stop you and your dog from enjoying the outdoors.

Instead, focus on what you can do:

> Check your dog's skin after walks, especially their legs, paws and tummy. Small sores, swelling or unexplained patches of redness are worth keeping an eye on.

> Give muddy paws and legs a gentle rinse if your dog has been out in wet or muddy conditions. While this hasn't been proven to prevent Alabama Rot, it's good general hygiene and gives you the chance to spot any changes early.

> Most importantly, trust your instincts. If your dog develops skin sores that don't seem right, or they're unusually tired, off their food or vomiting, don't wait to "see how they are tomorrow". It is important to get them checked by a vet.

Because when it comes to Alabama Rot, awareness is far more valuable than fear!

As the days get cooler, it’s easy to assume fleas, ticks and other parasites disappear, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.

🦟 MYTH: “Fleas die off when the weather gets cold.”
❌ FALSE! Fleas can survive all year round indoors. Warm homes provide the perfect environment for flea eggs and larvae to develop, meaning an infestation can quickly become a problem.

🏠 MYTH: “My pet stays indoors, so they can't get parasites.”
❌ FALSE! Parasites can enter your home on clothing, shoes or other animals, and indoor pets can still be affected.

🐾 MYTH: “I’ll treat my pet when I see a parasite.”
❌ FALSE! Prevention is much better than waiting for a problem to develop. Regular, appropriate parasite treatment helps protect your pet and your home.

Deceased cat 🐱

Sadly, a deceased cat has been handed into our practice. She is female, relatively young, and grey / white in colour. Her right ear tip is missing (u-shape).

She was found on Rope Way, Chipping Norton.

As we head into autumn and winter, it’s worth remembering that our senior pets can need a little extra support when temperatures drop.

Older dogs and cats may find it harder to regulate their body temperature, and conditions such as arthritis can become more noticeable. You may notice your pet is slower to get up, less keen on walks, reluctant to use the stairs, or generally less mobile than usual.

Here are a few things to think about as the colder months approach:

🏡 Keep them warm and comfortable
Make sure your pet has a warm, cosy bed away from draughts. Older pets may particularly appreciate a supportive, easy-to-access bed and somewhere warm to rest.

🐾 Think about mobility
Cold weather can make stiff joints more uncomfortable. Consider non-slip rugs or mats on slippery floors, ramps or steps where appropriate, and keeping exercise gentle and consistent for mental wellbeing.

⚖️ Keep an eye on their weight
Reduced activity can mean your pet needs fewer calories, and maintaining a healthy weight is particularly important for older pets with joint problems. If you’re unsure whether your pet is at their ideal weight, we can help.

🩺 Don’t assume changes are simply ‘old age’
Changes in mobility, behaviour, appetite, drinking, toileting or sleep can sometimes indicate an underlying health problem. Senior pets benefit from regular health checks, and these can be a great opportunity to discuss any changes you’ve noticed.

💊 Ask us about pain and joint support
If your pet seems stiff, slower or uncomfortable, speak to our veterinary team. There are a range of ways we can support older pets, depending on their individual needs.

Did you know that those little treats we give our pets can add up to a surprising number of calories?

For a medium-sized dog, just three small cubes of cheese can contain the equivalent number of calories as an entire bag of crisps for a person.

And for our feline friends, the difference is even more striking! For a cat, three cubes of cheese can be roughly equivalent to a whole double cheeseburger for a human.

This doesn't mean your pet can never have a treat, but treats should generally make up no more than around 10% of a pet's daily calorie allowance, with their main diet adjusted accordingly.

Why does maintaining a healthy weight matter?

Being overweight can increase the risk of problems such as:

🐾 Joint and mobility issues
🩺 Diabetes
❤️ Cardiovascular problems
🫁 Breathing difficulties
💤 Reduced quality of life
⏳ And potentially a shorter lifespan

It isn't always easy to tell if your pet is overweight, particularly when you see them every day. That's why regular weight checks are so important.

Crisp walks and colourful leaves make autumn a wonderful time of year, but it also brings a few seasonal hazards for our pets.

🍄 Avoid wild mushrooms – Many are toxic, so don't let curious noses investigate or eat them.

🌰 Watch out for conkers and acorns – They can cause stomach upsets, blockages and, in some cases, poisoning if eaten.

🎆 Prepare for fireworks early – Don't wait until Bonfire Night. If your pet is nervous, now is the time to start planning how you'll help them cope.

🦴 Support ageing joints – Cooler weather can make arthritis more noticeable. If your pet seems stiff or reluctant to exercise, speak to our team.

🚶 Stay visible on darker walks – Reflective leads, collars and lights help keep both you and your pet safe as the evenings draw in.

As the weather becomes cooler and damper, you may notice your pet slowing down a little more than usual. For pets living with arthritis, changes in temperature can make stiff joints and aching muscles even more uncomfortable.

This National Arthritis Week, we're encouraging pet owners to look out for the signs and take simple steps to help keep their four-legged friends comfortable.

Signs of arthritis include:

> Difficulty getting up after resting
> Reluctance to jump, climb stairs or go for walks
> Stiffness, especially first thing in the morning
> Limping or changes in gait
> Sleeping more or becoming less active

Arthritis doesn't just affect older pets; it can develop in younger animals too, particularly after injury or in certain breeds. The earlier it's recognised, the more we can do to help manage it and improve your pet's quality of life.

If you think your pet may be showing signs of arthritis, don't put it down to "just getting older." Book an appointment with our team so we can help keep them happy, comfortable and enjoying life for years to come.
