Ziggy, a beautiful Hungarian Vizsla, was brought to the clinic after her owners noticed she had become unwell. She had been experiencing vomiting, reduced appetite, and seemed more subdued than usual.
Further investigations were performed, including diagnostic imaging, to determine the cause of her illness. The results revealed the culprit: a corn on the cob lodged within her stomach. Although corn kernels themselves can often pass through the digestive tract, the cob is a very different story. Corn cobs are notorious for causing intestinal blockages in dogs, as they are difficult to digest and can become stuck within the gastrointestinal tract, leading to potentially life-threatening complications.
Once the diagnosis was confirmed, the decision was made to proceed with surgery. Ziggy was carefully prepared for the procedure, and our veterinary team worked together to remove the obstruction safely. During surgery, the corn on the cob was successfully located and removed from her stomach. Thankfully, there was no evidence of severe damage to the surrounding tissues, and the procedure went smoothly.
Ziggy's story serves as an important reminder that seemingly harmless foods can pose serious risks to our pets. Corn cobs are a common cause of gastrointestinal obstruction in dogs and should always be kept well out of reach. Fortunately for Ziggy, her owners recognised that something was wrong and sought veterinary attention promptly, allowing us to intervene before more serious complications developed.
Throughout her stay, Ziggy was a pleasure to care for. Our nursing team thoroughly enjoyed looking after her and commented on what a lovely patient she was, charming everyone she met with her gentle nature.
We're very pleased to report that Ziggy has made an excellent recovery and is now back to enjoying life.
