Trick or treat? Definitely treat... but not THAT kind! 🎃

👻Halloween can be a bit spooky for our four-legged friends, so here are a few tips to keep them safe and happy:

🍫 Keep sweets and chocolate well out of reach (chocolate and xylitol are toxic to dogs)

🚪 Pop your dog in a quiet room if the doorbell's going to be busy, so there's no dashing out the door (protecting those joints too)

👻 Costumes only if your dog genuinely enjoys them, and nothing tight, noisy or covering their eyes

🕯️ Watch out for candles and pumpkin lanterns around waggy tails

If your pup does get into something they shouldn't, ring your vet straight away.

Have a safe and spooky one from all of us at Operation K9 🧡

P.s Should we have a halloween photo competition this year?! ?

Wet, cold and miserable out there today?! 🌧️🐾

After a hydrotherapy session your dog's coat is wet, and on days like this they can lose body heat fast on the way home 🚗

That's especially true for older dogs, dogs with arthritis, and thin-coated breeds. 🥶

Warm, relaxed muscles are exactly what we work so hard for in the sessions, so we don't want them stiffening up again in the car!

That's why we love our Collared Creatures drying coats 💚

✅ Soaks up water fast so your dog dries quicker
✅ Keeps them warm and cosy after their session
✅ Keeps your car seats a lot less soggy!
✅ Brilliant for muddy walks and beach days too

We stock them here at Operation K9, so just ask at your next session to see the sizes and colours 🐶
Sizes XS to XXL prices from £29

Prefer to see it on a dog first? Ask us at your next session and we'll show you how they fit.

Today is Pet Obesity Awareness Day 💙

Extra weight is tough on joints, and walks alone can be hard work when everything aches 🦴

Warm-water hydrotherapy and the underwater treadmill let dogs move freely with less load on their legs, building strength at a pace that suits them 💦

Every dog is different, so always chat with your vet first if you're worried about weight or mobility ⚖️

Regular weigh-ins with our patients ensure we keep a close eye on their progress, and our experienced therapists and nurses support their owners with a plan, accountability and progression when it comes to shifting those pesky pounds

We're here to help with a gentle exercise plan that fits around their care 🐾

World Arthritis Day on Monday 12 October 💙

We've crunched the numbers and the main condition we treat here are Operation K9 is arthritis - over 40% of the patients we see have been diagnosed with arthritis (and those are only the ones confirmed by a vet)

Arthritis isn't just an "old dog" thing, and the early signs are easy to miss. Keep an eye out for signs such as;

🐾 Being slow to get up, especially after a rest
🐾 Not wanting to jump in the car or onto the sofa
🐾 Lagging behind on walks, or wanting to head home early
🐾 Licking at a wrist, knee or hip
🐾 Getting a bit grumpy when touched in certain places

If any of these sound familiar, have a chat with your vet first.
Warm-water hydrotherapy can be a lovely, low-impact way to keep joints moving and muscles strong, especially as the colder weather sets in.

Any questions, just give us a shout 🐶

Let's have a chat about Hip Dysplasia

What is Hip Dysplasia? 🐾

🔹️A degenerative, often genetic, condition causing hip joint laxity that develops into arthritis.
🔹️Mainly affects large breeds but can occur in small breeds.
🔹️Excess weight, activity, and genetics influence its development.
🔹️Building muscle helps stabilise the joint and reduces symptoms.

Effects on the Dog

🔸️Causes inflammation and pain, especially during movement.
🔸️Dogs compensate by altering posture and movement, stressing other muscles
🔸️Postural changes include lowering the head shifting weight forwardand flexing the spine
🔸️Abnormal gait can look like bunny hopping, a hip 'sway', skipping and lameness
🔸️Stopping on walks, 'laziness', stiffness on rising from rest

Management and Treatment

🐕Early diagnosis allows more options.
Strategies include weight control, diet, pain medications, surgery (like total hip replacement), and rehabilitation.
Combining these approaches can lead to a long, pain-free life with proper veterinary support.

💦Hydrotherapy does not fix the malformed hip, but it can ease pain, stiffness, and weakness by letting the dog exercise while the joint is unloaded.
By building up the surrounding muscle and structures, this in turn helps stabilise the joint, therefore improving the symptoms 💪

Big congratulations to Issy on her graduation this week 🎓🎉

Issy started her veterinary physiotherapy placement with us a couple of years ago. She went on to qualify as a level 4 canine hydrotherapist during her time with us through Operation K9 Academy 💦

Issy has been working at our Sherburn centre and also covering Melissa's maternity leave at Beverley 👶

All that hard work has paid off and she is spreading her physiotherapy wings at HurdlesVetPhysio, treating dogs at Sherburn and also offering home visits for Physiotherapy and Laser

Well done Issy, a credit to our team 🫶🎓💦🎉

Happy Birthday to Us 🎂🎉

This weeks marks 12 years of Operation K9 🎂🐾

Twelve years ago we set out to help dogs move better, feel better and live fuller lives.
What we found instead was a whole community.

To every referring vet who has trusted us with their patients, Thank you!
Your partnership is the foundation of everything we do.

To our colleagues past and present, the nurses, hydrotherapists, physios and the whole team who show up with skill, patience and so much heart, you are Operation K9 🤝

To our patients, the post-op recoveries, the arthritic seniors, the fitness fans and the ones who just love a paddle. You are the reason we get up in the morning.
Watching you gain strength, confidence and that wag-in-the-water moment never gets old. ❤️‍🩹💦

And to every owner who has driven the extra miles, followed the home plans, celebrated the small wins and put your trust in us, thank you. You make the work matter. 👏🙏

Twelve years of warm water, wet towels, happy tails and some very proud humans. We couldn’t have done any of it without you.

Here’s to many more years, and to many more dogs finding their stride. 💙
