A lovely home visit to see a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel…A breed I don’t see very often!

Bruno has been settling into his new home and his family want to make sure the small issues they are experiencing now, doesn’t get out of hand.

Very wise!

We covered recall, good manners and preventing jumping up from being rehearsed and generally building up his confidence and focus around the owners when outside on walks.

What a week!

It’s brilliant the weather is cooler and I have managed to see new clients as well as ongoing clients this week. Luckily escaping the rain each time we trained.

After finishing up with my last client of the week, I walk my own dog Koda and we get absolutely and utterly soaked! He did not know what to make of it and looked like a drowned weasel 🤣

Here is a good looking respectful photo of one of my ongoing clients Border Collie making great progress around cafe areaa.

…and yes, my very own..drowned….weasel looking sorry for himself!

Well… what have we here!

A cone that’s not up right 🤦‍♀️

This is where you can get fearful behaviours if your pup hasn’t come across this ‘particular’ environment before and it’s sooo minor, yet important for dogs to take the time to check it out!

Koda decides to pretend to sniff a rock whilst eyeing up the ‘upset cone’ (This is a displacement behaviour - similar to us in social situations if we are unsure, we might hide behind our phones) before going to check it out by stretching (often seen when dogs are anxious around people and unsure whether to greet or not) and then zooming away due to the built up adrenaline kicking in - Fight or flight!!

Training around gunshot noises!

If you turn your volume up, this actually sounds like fireworks. We started further away initially so not to startle him and then closer once comfortable.

Koda will be doing gundog work so it is especially important he feels comfortable around bangs!

Although we do hope he isn’t this relaxed whilst working! 🤣

𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤 & 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧!

Here is the lovely Finn during one of my Walk & Train sessions. Being a huge Border Collie fan, I was very pleased to be asked to take him out 😍

The owners have been putting in a lot of hard work after our training sessions to help Finn feel more confident around dogs in general which is paying off. A one on one session with myself can really help progress things further and to really bulletproof good behaviour around all different environments 🦮

Here is one of my lovely clients with her Australian shepherd pup! I put up a photo of her a little while ago as a young pup for our first few sessions…

Now look at her! A model dog 🐕

Both have put in a lot of work for loose lead walking. This is one of the hardest things to master simply due to our ever changing environments. Flora is great doing amazing out on walks, but more practice is needed to remind her to remain calm around ALL distractions.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐟?

I often recommend the ‘Find It’ game to my clients to teach their dogs.

It is SO simple, yet so effective.

Why?

✅ The simple act of sniffing is intrinsically reinforcing for all dogs
✅ This provides mental stimulation and can tire a dog out
✅ Sniffing can lower stress/cortisol levels since it releases dopamine. The higher the intensity of the sniffing, the lower their heart rate can go! This is especially great for reactive dogs.
✅ This game can help a dog slow down whilst ‘watching the world go by’
✅ Dogs can pair up things in the environment they are anxious about by giving them a positive job to do such as sniffing!
✅ This can be used inside the house if the weather is bad or in the garden to help promote calmness instead of barking!
