Five wasps entered this tunnel. The guard bees pushed all five back out.
Wasp pressure has been heavy around some of my nucs, so I’ve been testing an entrance I designed to make them easier for the bees to defend.
Instead of providing a straight route into the nuc, anything entering must pass through a long, narrow tunnel. This creates a confined point where the guard bees can confront wasps before they reach the inside.
I’ve fitted the entrances to several of my nucs. One happened to be under heavy wasp pressure while I was filming. Within a few minutes, five wasps entered the tunnel and the guard bees pushed them all back out. Meanwhile, the bees quickly learned the new route and continued flying normally.
This is one short observation from one nuc, so I’m now gathering longer-term feedback from other beekeepers using them.
After I first shared the design, the stock I had available sold out and I had to make more. Around 40 entrances went out to beekeepers across the UK over the following week. The early feedback has been really encouraging, so I’ve made another run available.
The introductory price is £5 each. Postage is £3.55 using a 48-hour service.
Each disc is 125mm in diameter. They fit Maisemore and BS Honey Bees poly nucs directly. They also appear to fit Paynes poly nucs if the screw position is moved, although I haven’t personally confirmed the Paynes fit yet.
The design is patent pending.
