Two dog trainers, a drinking game, and some VERY controversial dog breed rankings. What could possibly go wrong?

In today's video, we're putting our dog breed knowledge, personal preferences, and professional opinions to the test with a hilarious twist on the game Wavelength!

We're debating the BEST and WORST dog breeds, challenging each other's rankings, and finding out just how differently two professional dog trainers can see the exact same breed.

🐾 TRAINED OR UNTRAINED? YOU DECIDE! 👀

How well trained is your dog really? 🐕

There’s a difference between a dog that looks trained and one that truly understands what’s expected of them.

🐕 3 STEPS TO PLAYING WITH YOUR DOG THE RIGHT WAY!

Playing with your dog should be about more than just throwing a ball or tiring them out.

When done correctly, play can help you:

🐾 Build engagement and focus

🐾 Improve communication

🐾 Strengthen your relationship

In this video, I’m breaking down 3 simple steps to making play more structured, productive and enjoyable for both you and your dog.

💬 How do you normally play with your dog? Tug, fetch or something else?

Is this how your dog acts on EVERY walk? 😅

Pulling like a maniac, reacting to other dogs, acting like a clown on the lead?

This crazy man went from THAT ➡️ to calm walking by my side in just 10 minutes.

Full step-by-step breakdown is on our YouTube - ASK9 Ireland (link in bio) 🎥

Do you exercise your dog endlessly… but they STILL can’t settle at home?

More exercise isn’t always the answer.

Physical exercise and settling are two completely different skills. If you constantly try to exhaust a dog that doesn’t know how to switch off, you can end up with a fitter dog that still can’t relax.

Settling is a skill — not an obedience command.

For some dogs, doing absolutely nothing is genuinely difficult. They’ll pace, whine, wander around looking for something to do or constantly demand interaction.

That’s why we’ll sometimes safely tether a dog beside us and simply let them learn that nothing is happening — and that’s okay.

We’re not constantly asking for a sit or down and turning it into another obedience exercise. We’re removing some of their options and giving them the opportunity to figure out how to switch off for themselves.

Exercise your dog. Give them stimulation and appropriate outlets.

But if your dog can’t settle, don’t assume they just need even more exercise. Sometimes they need to learn how to do nothing.

THE E-COLLAR DEBATE IS MISSING SOMETHING

Yesterday, Stormont debated a proposed ban on e-collars, prong collars and other training tools.

I have two major problems with the way this conversation is being framed.

First, dog training is being presented as an either/or choice: you either train with rewards, or you train using pain and fear.

That simply isn’t how many professional trainers actually train dogs.

In this video, I’m using positive reinforcement to teach a dog that will eventually also be trained with an e-collar. Rewards and training tools are not mutually exclusive.

Second is the suggestion that owners who use these tools are somehow “lazy.”

The owners I work with are often the complete opposite.

Many have spent thousands of pounds, invested countless hours into training and tried multiple approaches because they desperately want to give their dog more freedom and a better quality of life.

We absolutely should be discussing animal welfare and how training tools are used.

But if we’re going to legislate on dog training in Northern Ireland, then let’s have an informed conversation about what responsible modern training actually looks like.

Watch the training. Ask questions. Challenge the methods.

But let’s have the conversation.

When should you start training your dog? Day one. 🐾

Coamh has just arrived for his Board & Train, and his training starts straight away.

Because whether you realise it or not, your dog is learning every single day.

They’re learning what gets them attention. What they’re allowed to get away with. How they behave around the house. How they respond to you.

So even when you’re not actively training them — they’re still learning.

The more unwanted behaviours are rehearsed, the more ingrained they become.

That’s why, whether you’ve brought home a new puppy or an older dog, I’d rather start from day one and begin building the habits we actually want.

Don’t wait for bad habits to develop before you start training. Start them off right from the beginning.

Your dog does NOT need to meet every dog they see. 🐾

One of the biggest misconceptions around socialisation is that your dog needs to interact with as many dogs as possible.

For me, I’d much rather have a dog that can see another dog and simply carry on with their day.

Constantly allowing greetings can teach your dog that seeing another dog means they should get access to them — and when they can’t, that’s where pulling, whining, barking and frustration can start to develop.

That doesn’t mean your dog should never interact with other dogs. Appropriate interactions are absolutely fine.

But sometimes another dog is just there — and it has absolutely nothing to do with them.

A well-socialised dog isn’t one that needs to meet every dog. It’s one that can comfortably ignore them.

The most important command your dog will ever learn. 🐾

For me, nothing comes above a reliable recall.

It’s what allows Simba to have this level of off-leash freedom — because when I call him, I need to know he’s coming back.

Not when he feels like it.
Not after calling him five times.
The first time.

That reliability means more freedom, more places he can explore and a much better life without having to spend every walk attached to a lead.

Off-leash freedom is earned through reliability.
