Teaching your dog not to jump up is tricky when well-meaning people on walks give them attention the moment their paws leave the floor.

To build reliable manners, dogs need clear, controlled opportunities to practice with people who actually follow the rules.

That is exactly why we set up structured greeting scenarios in class. Working with owners who know to wait for four paws on the floor gives your dog the repetitions they need to succeed.

πŸ’šπŸ©· Has a well meaning stranger ever accidentally rewarded your dog for jumping?

Your dog doesn't need to say hello to every dog they see.

In fact, teaching your dog to calmly observe other dogs moving around at a comfortable distance is one of the most valuable life skills you can build.

When we shift the goal from social greetings to calm observation, we remove social pressure, lower arousal, and prevent frustration on lead.

Reward the quiet check-ins. Celebrate the simple watching. Calm builds confidence!

πŸ’šπŸ©· Does your dog prefer social greetings or calm watching?

Notice how much better your dog processes information after a quick break from the action?

Stepping into a quiet spot during a session or walk acts as an emotional reset button. Sniffing in the grass or resting in the shade helps lower heart rates, reduce arousal, and even out trigger stacking before stress or excitement creeps too high.

Building small reset points into your outings gives your dog’s nervous system time to process the environment, keeping training low-stress and frustration-free.

πŸ’šπŸ©· Do you use reset points on your daily walks?

Watching a puppy grow up into a confident, happy young dog is easily one of the best parts of this job.

Snickers has been with us at Cystals Good Pups almost right from the very beginning. Swipe across to see him at his very first class compared to last night celebrating his 1st birthday in style!

We celebrated with party hats, pupcups, and a brilliant session showing off just how far his focus and life skills have come.

Training isn't about reaching a finish line or expecting perfection overnight. It's about supporting a growing brain through every age and stage, building a rock-solid relationship, and helping them navigate the world with confidence. Snickers' parents have done all this and more!

Snickers, you've been absolute joy since day one. Happy 1st Birthday from all of us! 🌟

"Paws Up" is a fun exercises to teach. It might just look like a bit of fun, but it's doing so much more than that.

By encouraging your dog to place their front paws onto a safe object, you're helping them to build:
- Body awareness
- Confidence
- Problem-solving skills
- Focus and engagement

It's also a brilliant foundation for future training and can be adapted for dogs of all ages and abilities.

As always, let your dog choose to interact with the object. Reward curiosity, keep sessions short, and make it fun.

Sometimes the simplest exercises teach the biggest life skills.

πŸ’šπŸ©· Has your dog mastered "Paws Up" yet? Darcey certainly has!

When people think about dog training classes, they often picture dogs learning new skills.

But there's something just as important happening.

People are learning too. Sharing experiences. Celebrating successes. Talking through challenges. Supporting one another.

Dog training can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when things don't go to plan. Having a community of people who understand the journey can make all the difference.

Of course, our dogs are learning life skills……but so are we.

πŸ’šπŸ©· What's been the most valuable thing you've learned from other dog owners?

Puppies are constantly learning. Every new experience, every walk, every training session and every nap helps shape how they see the world.

Some days they'll seem to understand everything you've taught them. The next day, it can feel as though they've forgotten it all! That's completely normal.

Growing brains are busy brains, and learning isn't a straight line. Progress often comes in waves, with leaps forward, little setbacks, and plenty of repetition along the way.

The most important thing you can bring to puppy training isn't perfection. It's patience.

Keep sessions short, make learning fun, and celebrate the little moments of progress. Those tiny successes soon add up.

πŸ’šπŸ©· What's something your puppy has learned recently that made you smile?

Chewing is one of the most natural behaviours our dogs have.

When it's too hot for long adventures, offering an appropriate chew can be a wonderful way to help them relax while still meeting an important behavioural need.

Chewing can help dogs to:
- Express natural chewing behaviours
- Relax and unwind
- Stay mentally occupied
- Enjoy a calm activity during the warmest part of the day

Whether your dog prefers a durable chew toy, a yak milk chew, antler or another suitable option, the best choice is one that's appropriate for their age, size, chewing style and individual preferences. Just like people, every dog is different.

Some dogs love to chew for a while, others prefer a quick nibble before finding a cool spot for a nap and that's perfectly okay.

πŸ’šπŸ©· Is your dog a champion chewer, or do they prefer games and puzzles?

When it's too hot for long walks, we don't have to stop learning. You don't need a long session or lots of equipment.
Just five minutes can provide your dog with:
- Mental stimulation
- Quality time with you
- Confidence through learning
- A chance to exercise their brain instead of their body

Simple tricks like spin, touch, paws up, or a chin rest are all great options for hot days.

Remember, the goal isn't to teach the perfect trick. It's to enjoy learning together.

Keep sessions short, make them fun, and finish while your dog is still engaged and wanting more.

Sometimes the best summer workout happens in your living room.
