Another lovely client review, this time from Navi’s owner, who regularly joins us for our Neutrality Classes 🐾

Seeing the progress Navi has made week in, week out has been amazing — and it all comes down to consistency.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight. It comes from turning up, putting the work in and continuing to train even when things aren’t perfect.

Navi is always a pleasure to have in class, and watching his confidence and neutrality continue to grow is proof that hard work really does pay off.

Watching him happy roll half way through class is my absolute favourite😂🤍

It’s something I hear often:

“We didn’t get a puppy because we don’t have the time.”

So, instead, they get a rescue dog.

But a rescue dog isn’t a shortcut.

Yes, you might skip the puppy stage — but you don’t skip the responsibility that comes with bringing a dog into your life.

Of course, not every rescue dog comes with behavioural issues or needs extensive training. Some settle beautifully into their new homes with very little difficulty. But you simply cannot assume that will be the case.

A rescue dog still needs time to decompress, build a relationship with you, learn your routine, understand your expectations and settle into a completely new life.

And some will come with established behaviours, previous experiences, fears or insecurities that need working through. You may have to undo behaviours that have been rehearsed for years before you can begin building new ones.

That doesn’t make rescue dogs bad dogs, and it certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t rescue.

It just means older doesn’t automatically mean easier.

Rescue dogs deserve more than simply fitting around the time you have available. They deserve someone prepared to give them the time they need — whatever that looks like for the individual dog.

So if the reason you’re choosing a rescue is “we don’t have time for a puppy”…

It might be worth asking whether you actually have time for a dog.

Training your dog can be hard enough. Doing it alone can make it even harder.

Having a reactive dog, struggling with behaviour, or simply working towards your training goals can sometimes feel isolating. Having good people around you — people who understand, support you and celebrate the little wins — can make such a difference.

When I started House of K9, one thing I really wanted to create was a community.

A judgement-free space where people could come together because of their love for their dogs. Somewhere you could turn up, train, learn, ask questions, have a laugh and be surrounded by people who just get it.

And somehow, it's become even more than that.

Our classes now feel like one big group of friends. People meet up to train together, arrange walks outside of classes, support each other through the difficult days and celebrate each other's progress.

Real friendships have been made — all thanks to our dogs. 🖤

Dog training isn't always easy, and progress isn't always straightforward. But having people around you can make the journey a whole lot better.

Find your people. Build your community. Don't do it on your own🫶

Stop calling rewards bribes.

The difference? Timing.

A bribe is using the reward to persuade your dog to do something before they have made the right choice.

A reward comes after the behaviour. It tells your dog, “That was exactly what I wanted.”

This is why we need to be mindful of how we use food.

A hand already in your pocket, waving a treat in front of your dog, or showing them the reward before they respond can accidentally turn a reward into a bribe.

The treat should follow the behaviour, not lead it.

The goal isn’t for your dog to only listen when they know food is coming. The goal is to build understanding, create habits, and teach your dog that making the right choices pays off.

Food isn’t the problem.
Poor timing is.
