Some dogs are part of my working life for years 💛🐾

I see them week after week, watch them grow and change, learn all their little quirks and build friendships with their families that become such a lovely part of what I do.

And then there are dogs like Blossom 🧡

Blossom and her owner only worked with me for a relatively short time, during a period when things felt really difficult and overwhelming.

We worked through the tricky bits together, celebrated the small wins and helped Blossom feel more comfortable and confident in the world.

Then, as often happens with training, they reached the point where they didn’t really need me anymore.

Which is exactly what we want.

Eight months on, I heard from Blossom’s owner, who told me she is still keeping up with everything we worked on and that Blossom is doing brilliantly.

It was such a lovely reminder that some of the relationships in this job may be brief, but they can still mean a great deal.

Dog walking gives me the privilege of knowing some dogs and their families for many years. Training sometimes means being invited into their lives for just a few weeks or months.

But however long I’m part of their story, I become invested in them.

I remember them. I wonder how they’re doing. And I’m always genuinely thrilled when I hear that life is going well.

Sometimes I leave a little mark on their lives, but they most definitely leave a little mark on mine 💛🐾

Happy International Dog Day! 💛🐾

Did you know International Dog Day was first celebrated in 2004, founded by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige to celebrate dogs, raise awareness of those in need of rescue, and promote responsible ownership?

More than 20 years later, it’s still a lovely chance to celebrate the dogs who mean so much to us, while remembering what the day stands for.

The companionship, laughter and comfort. The muddy paws, hair on our clothes, stolen sofa spots, unique quirks and little routines that become such a big part of everyday life 🐶💛

But loving a dog also comes with responsibility: to meet their needs, listen to what they’re communicating, help them feel safe, and give them the care and understanding they need to thrive.

Because our dogs deserve more than simply being loved.

They deserve to be understood too 💛🐾

It turns out 13 years on, my old life in Children and Families Social Work still has a place in my dog training world 💛

I’ve been quietly busy behind the scenes over the last few months completing a course in trauma-informed practice, looking at trauma in both dogs and humans.

With a little help from my study buddy Pixel, obviously… 😂🐾

Before Doggie Dawdles, I spent many years working in Children and Families Social Work, where understanding behaviour in the context of someone’s experiences was such an important part of the job.

Because behaviour rarely happens for no reason.

That’s something I’ve carried with me into dog training too.

The dog who freezes, barks, lunges, shuts down, struggles to cope or finds certain situations overwhelming isn’t simply being “difficult”. The behaviour is telling us something.

And, of course, there’s a person at the other end of the lead too, sometimes worried, embarrassed, frustrated, overwhelmed or simply trying desperately to do the right thing.

Trauma-informed practice is about looking beyond what we can immediately see, understanding what may be driving behaviour, creating safety and working with the individual in front of us rather than forcing them through a predetermined process.

It feels like a very natural extension of the way I already work.

Kind, curious and without judgement, for both ends of the lead 💛🐾

My posts are usually cheerful and upbeat, and this one isn’t meant to be negative. But lately I’ve found myself thinking a lot about originality.

In an industry where it can sometimes feel as though the same ideas, wording and services are being repeated from one business to the next, I think there’s something really important about having the confidence to think for yourself.

For me, that means continuing to draw on my own knowledge and experience, developing my own ideas, and building services around what I genuinely believe will help the dogs and people I work with.

Not because being different for the sake of it matters, but because authenticity does.

There’s room for different trainers, different approaches and different ways of doing things.

So I’m going to keep doing what I’ve always tried to do: keep learning, keep thinking independently, keep creating, and keep making Doggie Dawdles feel like Doggie Dawdles.

Authentically me 💛🐾

From 11-week-old puppy to canal boat companion 💛🐾

When Dude’s family welcomed him into their lives, they already had plenty of experience with dogs.

But they also had a very specific goal for their new puppy…

They wanted Dude to be able to join them on their canal boat 🛶

Dude started his Puppy Training Package with me at just 11 weeks old, so from those early weeks we could begin building the foundations for the adventures they hoped to share together.

We weren’t simply working through a standard list of puppy exercises. His training was tailored around Dude as an individual, the lifestyle he was going to be part of, and the skills and confidence he would need along the way.

Of course, we worked on all those important puppy foundations too, but always with the bigger picture in mind.

And Dude’s family continued putting those foundations into practice, giving him the experiences, guidance and support he needed as he grew.

Fast forward to Dude enjoying life on the water with his family 💛

One of my favourite things about one-to-one puppy training is being able to work closely with families and tailor their training to the individual puppy and the life they hope to share together.

Because puppy training isn’t just about raising a well-trained puppy.

It’s about preparing them for the life you want to enjoy together 💛🐾
