🐾 What happens when a dog simply hates being groomed?

One of the important conversations we had at PATS was around how we handle dogs in the grooming salon — particularly those that are frightened, stressed, reactive or simply don't want to be groomed.

Sue Williamson gave a thought-provoking talk:

“How do I handle pets that hate being groomed?”

It raised a much bigger conversation about behaviour, handling, recognising stress signals and knowing when we need to change our approach for the welfare of the dog.

And we're not stopping there.

B**A is pleased to say we'll be talking with Sue in much greater depth about this subject and looking at how we can provide groomers with practical education and guidance they can use in their salons.

Have you ever had a dog on your table and thought:

“I’m really not sure what to do with this coat…”

Or perhaps it’s not the dog at all.

That’s why we're developing the B**A Mentor Programme.

You have a challenge. We help connect you with someone who has the experience to help.

This isn't about judging how much somebody knows. It's about sharing knowledge and creating a profession where asking for help is considered part of continuing to learn.

The B**A Mentor Programme will be available to B**A members, and we'll be sharing details about how it will work shortly.

It was a pleasure for B**A Director Paula Bryan to meet TV vet Dr Scott Miller at PATS 2026.

Professional groomers are often in a unique position to notice changes in a dog’s skin, coat, body condition and behaviour — making communication and understanding across the grooming and veterinary professions increasingly important.

At B**A, we’re committed to raising professional standards, supporting education and keeping animal welfare at the heart of our industry.

What an awesome day we have had PATS. The vibe was amazing.
We had loads of lovely groomers come and support, everyone stopped and listened or watched the demos.
