🐾 WEDNESDAY NOMS TIP | A LITTLE WARMTH, A LOT MORE SMELL! 👃👅

On Monday we discovered that dogs have roughly 1,700 taste buds compared with our 9,000.

But here's something else worth knowing...

Temperature can change how appealing food AND treats are to your dog! 🐶

And it's not necessarily about the taste!

👃 IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SMELL!

Gently warming food can help release more of its aroma.

And because smell plays such a big role in how dogs experience food, that extra aroma can make things more interesting!

🍽️ GOT A FUSSY EATER?

Try serving wet food closer to room temperature rather than straight from the fridge.

Or add a little warm water to suitable dry food to help release its aroma.

🦴 WHAT ABOUT TREATS?

The same idea can apply!

🐾 Some dried treats can be softened with a little warm water, changing their texture and releasing more aroma.

🐾 Soft treats and pâtés can be offered at room temperature, where the product's storage instructions allow.

🐾 A little squeezable paste mixed with warm water can make a tasty addition to a lick mat or enrichment toy.

And here's another interesting bit...

Changing a treat's texture can change how your dog interacts with it, even when the ingredients stay exactly the same!

⚠️ A LITTLE NOMS REMINDER

We're talking gently warm, never hot!

Only soak or warm products where appropriate, follow storage instructions, and don't leave moistened treats sitting around.

And if your dog suddenly goes off their food, don't just assume they're being fussy.

Approximately 1,700 taste buds. Absolutely ZERO intention of wasting a crumb. 🤣

Elmo is today's Noms Knowledge assistant, demonstrating that snack time isn't officially over until every last crumb has been located and dealt with! 🐶😂

But considering how quickly some dogs inhale their dinner, you'd be forgiven for thinking they don't bother tasting it!

So, do dogs actually taste their food?

They absolutely do! But they experience food quite differently from us.

👅 THE TASTE BUDS

Humans have roughly 9,000 taste buds, while dogs have around 1,700.

So while dogs can taste their food, they have far fewer taste buds than we do!

🥩 WHAT CAN THEY TASTE?

Dogs can detect sweet, sour, salty, bitter and savoury tastes.

Unlike cats, dogs can also taste sweetness!

👃 THE NOSE KNOWS!

For dogs, smell plays an enormous role in how appealing food is.

Before they've even taken a bite, their nose is already gathering information about what's on the menu!

💧 A TASTE FOR WATER?

Here's a strange one!

Research suggests dogs have taste receptors that respond to water, particularly after eating certain foods.

Who knew plain old water could be so interesting?!

🐾 SO WHY ARE SOME DOGS FUSSY?

Because enjoying food isn't just about taste!

Smell, texture, temperature, previous experiences and individual preferences can all influence what a dog enjoys.

Which might explain why one dog thinks a particular treat is the greatest invention ever...

While another looks at you as though you've personally offended them. 🙄🤣

Meanwhile, Elmo is still checking the blanket for crumbs. Apparently, quality control is a full-time job. 🐊😂

🐊 THE FINAL CROCODILE HAS SPOKEN!

All 4 Brew Bar testers have now reported back... and we think it's safe to say these have earned their place at Noms! 🥳

We deliberately chose some serious chewers to put them through their paces, and here's how they got on:

🐊 Labrador: around 30 minutes of continuous chewing and loved it.
🐊 Great Dane #1: around 45 minutes of continuous chewing and one very happy pup.
🐊 Great Dane #2: prefers the leisurely approach, chewing, leaving it and coming back when she fancies. Hers could be hanging around for a while! 😂
🐊 Florence, Power Chewer Extraordinaire: around 35 minutes total with a Large Brew Bar, which her owner says is far longer than anything else they've tried.

Florence's feedback gave us something else we really liked too. As she chewed, the bar softened and became gooey rather than breaking into big, hard chunks. Her owner had previously stopped giving Yak chews because Florence could break large pieces off and swallow them, so this was a big plus for her.

Obviously every dog and every chew is different, and these aren't guaranteed chew times, but THIS is exactly why we love Real Life Noms testing. 🧪🐶

Not marketing promises.

🐊 BREW BAR RESULTS ARE IN!

Well... 3 out of 4 Crocodiles have reported back, and the Brew Bars have survived testing! 😂

We wanted real dogs to put them through their paces before properly releasing them, so here's how they got on:

🐾 Labrador: around 30 minutes of continuous chewing and absolutely loved it.

🐾 Great Dane #1: around 45 minutes of continuous chewing, with one very happy pup at the end.

🐾 Great Dane #2: taking a rather more leisurely approach... chewing it, abandoning it, returning when she fancies. 😂 This one could be around for a while!

🐾 Tester #4: results pending... 👀

Of course, every dog chews differently, so these aren't guaranteed chew times. But that's exactly why we wanted some proper Real Life Noms testing before telling you what we thought.

And the verdict so far?
