This is something I’ve done from the get-go because I strongly believe that the safety and wellbeing of the dogs in my care comes first. This is why I don’t allow them to rush over to or interact with unfamiliar dogs, nor would I expect members of the public to allow their dogs to approach mine, especially when we’re walking as a group. Allowing their dog to approach a group of unfamiliar dogs can put their own dog at risk, too.

Not every dog I walk is comfortable greeting others, and even when dogs appear friendly, I don’t know the history, temperament or needs of the dog approaching us. What might look like an innocent greeting can quickly escalate, putting the dogs in my care at risk. My clients trust me to keep their dogs safe, and they’re paying for a professional service where their dog’s welfare and safety are my responsibility. I don’t believe it’s worth taking unnecessary risks.

I also use these situations as opportunities to practise neutrality. Dogs should be able to see and pass one another without feeling the need to interact or rush over. We work on calm behaviours, disengagement and moving on, helping dogs understand that seeing another dog doesn’t automatically mean a greeting. This helps dogs who struggle with their space being invaded feel safer, while allowing those who are overexcited to practise remaining neutral, reducing frustration and the expectation of a greeting.

Of course, these things happen from time to time, but by regularly working on neutrality, we help our dogs navigate these situations more calmly. We continue to encourage engagement with us, reward good choices and create space where needed, allowing everyone to settle back into the group.

Ultimately, it’s about respecting each individual dog, protecting the progress they’ve made and recognising the responsibility that comes with caring for someone else’s dog.
