🐾 A little professional update from Kismet Holistic…

I’m really pleased to share that I am now a registered member of the International Association of Animal Therapists (IAAT).

For my existing clients, nothing changes about the care your dogs receive — but joining IAAT gives an additional layer of professional reassurance. IAAT is a widely recognised register for animal therapists, including within the veterinary and insurance sectors, with members expected to meet professional standards and continue developing their knowledge and skills.

One of the biggest reasons I chose to join was the fantastic range of continuing professional development (CPD) available. I’m a huge believer that qualifying as a therapist should never be the end of learning. Every course I take, technique I develop and area I explore gives me more knowledge to draw upon when assessing and treating the individual dog in front of me.

It also gives me the opportunity to continue broadening my knowledge beyond massage, particularly in areas that complement the work I already do around movement, conditioning and musculoskeletal health.

For anyone considering treatment for their dog, being able to choose a therapist who belongs to a recognised professional organisation can provide reassurance that they are committed to appropriate standards, ongoing education and working responsibly within their professional scope.

So, another little step forward for Kismet Holistic — and hopefully one that ultimately benefits every dog who comes through my clinic door. 🐾💛

This week canine massage therapy paid off in a way that isn't often mentioned. My dogs have been having regular massage therapy from Auntie Emma at Kismet Holistic Canine Therapies for the past 5 years, but beyond the dog sports world canine massage isn't that well known or appreciated so I'm sharing this story in the hope that more people outside of the dog sports world will see what an amazing thing it can be.

Rae is 13 1/2 years old and has arthritis. She also hates being at the vet which makes examining her limbs for pain responses very difficult. She is also not happy for me to mess around with her front legs, due to mistakes I made when she was young. So I called on Emma. Emma works on a consent basis, meaning she will only put hands on with the dog's consent. Because of this Rae has learnt to trust that when a certain mat is down and Emma is here, she is safe. This meant that Emma could examine her front leg, including her wrist and toes (something the vet or myself couldn't do) and determine where the pain actually was.

This meant that when I took Rae to the vet to review her pain medication, I was already armed with the relevant information, reducing the need for handling and therefore reducing stress. Obviously massage therapists aren't vets (though some may be) so can't provide a diagnosis, but we mostly ruled out soft tissue injury as being the cause of her pain and as inflammation and heat was noted at the joint, the vet had a much better idea of what was happening once we got there.

There are too many different benefits to massage therapy to list them all, but working with a consent based massage therapist has improved the lives of my dogs in so many ways and it really should be something better utilised outside of the dog sports world!

I’m really pleased to see that the Canine Massage Guild have published one of my articles on their website this month 🥰

The release of emotional trauma stored in fascia is a subject that has always fascinated me and is very close to my heart. I find the relationship between a dog’s emotional experiences, their body and the fascial system incredibly interesting, and it’s something that continues to influence the way I look at the dogs I work with.

If you fancy a read, you can find the full article here 👇

This is such an important message. It is always a good idea to get your dog checked if you have come across a training issue, even if it is just to rule out pain as a factor 🐶❤️

Training a dog or trying to modify an unwanted behaviour is a difficult, emotionally challenging and a time consuming process. As pet parents, we can feel alone, frustrated, disheartened, as if we are failing our beloved pets.We might be thinking our dog is bad, stubborn, unfixable. But what if there....

This will be an amazing talk 🐶❤️
