As Veterinary Nurse Appreciation Month comes to a close, we want to take a moment to say a truly heartfelt thank you to our incredible Veterinary Nurses, Student Nurses, and Patient Care Assistants.

Each and every one of our team bring such compassion, empathy, and dedication to their role every single day. The love, patience, and kindness you show to every pet—treating them as if they were your own—never go unnoticed and make such a difference to both our patients and their families.

We’re so grateful for everything they do, and it was lovely to celebrate together with some afternoon tea treats in abundance, along with a bit of fun thanks to our head of nursing Nicola, Nursing Bingo.

A thank you again for the care, passion, and positivity our nurses bring to the team—they truly make our practice what it is 💙

We are proud to be hosting a Pet Blood Bank donation session here at Southfields! ❤️

Could your dog be a life saver? Or do you know someone with a large, happy, and confident dog?

From needing help to helping save lives 🐶❤️
When two year old golden retriever Herbie trotted into his first blood donation session, nobody would have guessed what he'd been through...
In the past year alone, he'd undergone two serious operations, the second resulting in the removal of his right eye ❤️‍🩹
For his owner Carly, the thought of bringing Herbie back into a clinical setting, even for something positive, felt very daunting. That worry almost stopped her from registering with Pet Blood Bank.

‘I honestly shouldn't have worried at all,’ Carly said. ‘The team were absolutely amazing with him, reassuring me and Herbie from start to finish. They took everything completely at his pace.’ 🥰

And by the end of the session, he had donated a full unit of blood! 🩸

That single donation has the potential to save the lives of up to four other dogs in need, a remarkable thing for a dog who not long ago faced his own uncertain future 👏

We are proud to be hosting a Pet Blood Bank donation sessions here at our practice. Even if you're worried about how your dog might find it, it's worth coming along to see for yourself.

Our first donation session is on 26th July and we’d love to see you there! 🐶🐾 Visit Pet Blood Bank to learn more. https://ow.ly/az2S50Z4k6B

We are sorry to say that we very sadly had a deceased cat handed in to us on Sunday (24/05/26).
Unfortunately, we were unable to detect a microchip.
He is a domestic short hair black and white, male entire. He has white whiskers, belly & paws. The person who brought him into us found him in the Rayleigh area.

If you think he may be yours, or if you have any information, please contact us on 01268 564664.

From pain to playtime 🐾☀️

Meet Karim, a lovely Rottweiler, came to us with severe pain from an extensive osteosarcoma affecting his proximal femur. His quality of life was greatly affected, and even simple movements were difficult.
After receiving advanced palliative radiotherapy with our radiation oncologist, Dr James Elliott and the radiation team, everything changed.

Just 6 weeks later, Karim is:
✅ Walking comfortably and bearing weight on his leg
✅ Even cocking his leg again
✅ Sleeping through the night again
✅ Back to enjoying the simple things, like playing in the sun

Using highly sophisticated radiotherapy technology, we were able to deliver a single, high-dose treatment precisely targeting the tumour while sparing surrounding healthy tissues — and with no side effects.

Radiotherapy isn’t a cure in cases like this — but it can make an incredible difference where it matters most: quality of life 💙

This dedicated owners said, “I would recommend this to anyone. Karim has had no side effects and recovered very quickly from the treatment, and we've been given extra happy time with him!”

Meet our Staff Pet of the Month – Sully! 🐾

Sully belongs to our wonderful Lead RVN and Lead Patient Coordinator, Zoe. He’s a 4-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier with a big personality to match his handsome looks! 🐶
Sully’s favourite things are tasty snacks, enthusiastically “redecorating” his toys, and curling up across a lap for a well-earned snooze 💙

You might even recognise Sully from around the hospital walls, where he’s proudly featured as an adorable pup alongside other staff pets. Safe to say… he’s grown into a very handsome good boy indeed! 😍

We think you’ll agree — Sully is simply paw-fect! 🐾✨

For than giving a massive congratulations to our newly qualified RVN - Kira!

Kira joined Southfields in September 2020 as a Patient Care Assistant, where she quickly became an invaluable support to our theatre team. Through her compassion, commitment and hard work, Kira progressed into the role of Student Veterinary Nurse — and hasn’t looked back since.

In a multidisciplinary referral setting, veterinary nurses are central to delivering exceptional patient care. They work closely with multiple specialist teams, supporting advanced diagnostics, specialist procedures and complex treatment plans, while providing high‑level inpatient care. Referral nurses coordinate care across disciplines, monitor patients through every stage of their journey, and act as strong advocates for both patients and owners, combining advanced clinical skills with compassion, organisation and clear communication.

After more than three years of dedication, balancing college attendance, assignments, a clinical skills log, professional discussions and practical examinations, we are thrilled to share that Kira has successfully passed her final exams and is now pending registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons 👏🎉

We are so proud of Kira’s journey, determination and passion for patient care. She truly embodies everything Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month stands for.
Congratulations, Kira — your future as a Veterinary Nurse is very well deserved 💙🐶🐱
