⚠️ Ragwort Warning: Why Summer Conditions Increase the Risk ⚠️

The recent spell of hot, dry weather has left many paddocks with very little grazing. When grass becomes scarce, horses may be tempted to eat plants they would normally avoid – including ragwort.

Although fresh ragwort has a bitter taste, hungry horses may still consume it. Even more concerning is that once ragwort is cut and dried into hay or haylage, it loses its bitter taste while remaining just as toxic.

Ragwort contains toxins that cause irreversible liver damage, with the effects building up over time. Unfortunately, many horses don't show signs until the liver has already been significantly affected.

What signs should you look out for?

🐴 Unexplained weight loss
🐴 Dullness or lethargy
🐴 Poor coat condition
🐴 Reduced appetite or intermittent colic signs
🐴 Behavioural changes or unusual nervous signs
🐴 Yellowing of the eyes or gums (jaundice)
🐴 Sensitivity to sunlight, particularly on pink or white areas of skin

How can you reduce the risk?

✅ Walk your fields regularly and remove ragwort before it flowers and seeds.
✅ Ensure horses have plenty of forage if grazing is limited.
✅ Check hay and haylage carefully before feeding.
✅ Always wear gloves when handling ragwort and dispose of it safely.

If you're unsure whether a plant in your field is ragwort, or you're concerned your horse may have ingested it, please don't wait for symptoms to appear. Our veterinary team is always happy to offer advice and assess any concerns.

📞 If you have any questions, contact Fyrnwy Equine Hospital. We'd much rather answer a simple question today than treat a preventable illness tomorrow.

☀️ Keeping Horses Safe in Hot Weather 🐴

With temperatures rising, it's important to take extra care of your horses to help prevent heat stress and dehydration.

✅ Provide plenty of fresh, clean water at all times
✅ Add ice to water troughs or buckets to help keep water cool and encourage drinking
✅ Try apple bobbing – floating chopped apples in water can make drinking more appealing for some horses
✅ Ensure access to shade or well-ventilated shelter
✅ Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day (typically 11am–4pm)
✅ Exercise early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler
✅ Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of extreme heat, and if travel is essential, ensure good ventilation and frequent checks
✅ Consider adding electrolytes if your horse is sweating heavily (seek veterinary advice if unsure)
✅ Monitor for signs of heat stress, including excessive sweating, rapid breathing, lethargy, weakness, or reluctance to move
✅ Cool horses down effectively after exercise using cold water, and repeating until the horse is comfortable

⚠️ Watch for signs of heat stress or heatstroke, including:
• Excessive or absent sweating
• Rapid breathing or increased heart rate
• Lethargy or weakness
• Stumbling or uncoordinated movement
• Reluctance to eat or drink

If you notice any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.

Older horses, young foals, overweight horses, and those with underlying health conditions may be particularly vulnerable during hot weather.

🌞 Stay safe, stay cool, and help your horses beat the heat! If you have any concerns about your horse during the current warm spell, please don't hesitate to contact the practice for advice. 🐎💙

⚠️ Equine Influenza (Flu) – Important Biosecurity Update ⚠️

Due to the recent increase in confirmed cases of equine influenza within the UK, we are asking all clients to remain vigilant and help us protect the horses under our care.
Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can spread rapidly between horses via coughing, close contact, contaminated equipment, clothing and transport. Recent UK outbreaks have included cases in both vaccinated and recently travelled horses.

Clinical signs to watch for:
Raised temperature / fever (often the earliest sign)
Coughing
Nasal discharge
Lethargy or dullness
Reduced appetite
Swollen glands

A temperature above 38.5°C should be considered significant and may occur before obvious clinical signs develop.
What we are asking owners to do:
Before travelling your horse to the hospital or attending any appointment, please:
✔️ Take your horse’s temperature
✔️ Monitor closely for any cough, nasal discharge or lethargy
✔️ Contact us before travelling if your horse shows any signs of illness

As an additional precaution, all horses arriving at the hospital will have their temperature checked on arrival as part of our biosecurity procedures.

Vaccinations
In line with current recommendations, we strongly encourage owners to review their horse’s vaccination status with their veterinary surgeon.
The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) advises that:

“BEVA strongly endorses an optimal schedule achieved by increasing the frequency of boosters to within six months.”

For horses travelling, competing, attending clinics, sales, liveries or veterinary facilities, it may be appropriate to bring annual boosters forward depending on individual risk.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective tools in reducing both clinical disease and spread of infection, alongside strict biosecurity measures.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping keep our patients and the wider equine community safe.

Equine Flu Alert – Protect Your Horse ⚠️

We are currently seeing multiple outbreaks of equine influenza across the country, including cases within our region. Equine flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can spread rapidly between horses, causing fever, coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, and in some cases, prolonged recovery times.

🐴 Why this matters:
• Even healthy horses can become seriously unwell
• It spreads easily through the air and direct contact and contaminated equipment, clothing, and handlers
• Outbreaks can lead to yard lockdowns and disruption to competitions and travel

💉 Vaccination is your best defence
To support our clients in protecting their horses, we are offering a discounted vaccination course until June.
➡️ 1st and 2nd vaccination for just £79

🧪 Fast, reliable testing available
Our in-house laboratory can run PCR testing for equine influenza with results in as little as 2 hours, helping you act quickly and reduce spread.

We welcome both clients and local veterinary practices to make use of our diagnostic facilities.

📞 Please contact us to book vaccinations, arrange testing, or discuss any concerns about your horse.

Let’s work together to keep our horses safe and healthy.

🐴💉 Vaccination Amnesty – Limited Time Offer! 💉🐴

From 13th April to 8th June 2026, we’re excited to offer our very own Vaccination Amnesty – the perfect opportunity to get your horse’s vaccinations back on track.

If your horse’s vaccinations have lapsed or need restarting, you can take advantage of this special offer:
✨ 1st and 2nd vaccinations for just £79 ✨

Regular vaccination is one of the most important aspects of basic preventive healthcare for your horse. Diseases such as equine influenza and tetanus can spread quickly and have serious, sometimes fatal, consequences. By keeping vaccinations up to date, you’re not only protecting your own horse but also helping to reduce the risk across the wider equine community. Prevention is always safer, simpler, and more cost-effective than treatment.

📅This offer can be booked on our zone visits, helping you save even more while keeping things convenient.

📞 Want to book or find out more?
Please contact our friendly admin team who will be happy to help.

Let’s work together to keep your horses healthy, protected, and ready for the season ahead! 🌿🐎
