I thought we’d built a secure dog field… but apparently that’s not what people are booking 🐾

This lovely review was sent to us by Emma after her first visit and I had to share it because it perfectly sums up something we keep hearing…

“My dogs happiness is my happiness and they absolutely loved your dog park today.
The secure enclosed field gives peace of mind knowing they can run around freely and safely without the feeling of being enclosed.

I could relax and just let the dogs enjoy the experience.
It creates a calm, stress free environment where dogs can just be dogs.

I loved watching them run round having the times of their lives… one minute they’d disappear into the trees then reappear at the other end of the park. t’s a safe, natural environment for them to explore.

This one sentence really resonates with me…..“My dogs happiness is my happiness.”

I so get that and feel just the same — and that’s what so many people tell us after visiting.

Not:
“the fencing was good”
or
“the field was nice.”

It’s usually:

✨ “I actually relaxed.”

✨ “I forgot to look at my phone.”

✨ “I just enjoyed watching my dog.”

✨ “My dogs just had the best 20 minutes of their lives.”

That feeling of letting them run… sniff… disappear into the trees… then appear again looking ridiculously pleased with themselves 😅🌲🐾

Wild… but with the safety of a fence.

Don’t wait until your dog is fully committed!

Because by the time your dog has locked onto the rabbit hole / scent / feather / moving thing…you’re no longer having a conversation 😅

You’re negotiating with a furry detective who has already accepted the mission 🕵️🐾

I’ve realised I’m not always quick enough — and then wonder why they “aren’t listening” 😅

🚔 PD Gas visited again yesterday… .....and

he loved it so much the first time - he brought the whole family with him 🐾

This visit was less police operation……and more family day out 😂

PD Gas arrived with his gang — and they all had very different ideas about how the visit should go…

🐾 Saxon — the big beautiful Goldendoodle and an OK9 Welfare Dog supporting police officers and visiting schools ❤️ Calm, kind and taking everything in her stride.

📣 Nelly — tiny sausage dog × poodle. Small dog. Very big opinions. Main hobbies appear to be barking and chasing Gas.

👀 Jess — cockerpoo. Quiet. Sensible. Keeping out of trouble and watching the chaos unfold from a safe distance 😂

Safe to say there was a personality for everyone.

The best friend who never forgets you’re their favourite… 🐾

So, Monday June 8th is Best Friends Day.

And I’ve come to the conclusion dogs might actually be the best friends of all.

They don’t care what you look like.
They don’t care if work’s been rubbish.
They don’t care if you’re late.
They don’t care if you’ve achieved absolutely nothing that day.

You walk through the door…

…and they react like you’ve been missing for six months 😂

Tail wagging.
Whole bum wriggling.
Toy in mouth.
Following you to the loo like they haven’t seen you in forever.

I was looking back through old photos tonight and realised some of my favourite memories aren’t big occasions at all.

They’re just ordinary moments with the dogs that at the time don’t feel important.

Sat in the garden.

On the floor after work.

Walking side by side.

Someone quietly leaning on someone.

And over the last couple of months, this is something we keep hearing when people visit the field

Sometimes people book thinking:

“I’m doing something nice for my dog…”

…and then realise an hour later…

they’ve done something nice for them too and how much they all enjoyed themselves.

So for Best Friends Day…

Monday June 8th is Best Friends Day!

And I’ve come to the conclusion my dogs are the best friends of all.

I didn’t realise how nervous I was… until Holly and I arrived at the pond and stood at the edge of the water 💙

This afternoon Holly and I went to our first proper gun dog swimming class with Helen at Guns and Noses.

We actually tried once last year…

…but Holly was so young and excited she never even got in the water 😂

That session became practising being calm around other dogs instead; which was a very useful thing to do.

Today felt very different.

Since Holly broke her leg in March, I know I’ve become a bit protective. The thought of her launching herself into a pond wasn’t exactly filling me with confidence. But, I knew she would love it!

Helen was brilliant as always and quietly adapted things for us to protect Holly's leg — placing us where there was a gentle entry so Holly could walk into the water rather than jump.

We practised recall whistle work coming back out of the water, added some dummy retrieves and even did blind retrieves along the side of the pond to help her stay calm and understand she only goes into the water when asked (which actually feels like a really good safety lesson too).

And Holly…

She was an absolute little star ⭐

Reasonably calm and well behaved. It felt controlled which is good.

Watching her trust and act on the commands again felt good.

It also made me think of Sid ❤️

This was always his favourite class but sadly with his ear issues he can’t enjoy this one anymore, which made today feel a little sad at the same time too. He got extra cuddles when we got home.

Sid.

Age: 5
Weight: 36kg
Threat assessment skills: questionable.

This morning he encountered… this.

(See photo for the terrifying predator.)

One fly enters the room and he suddenly:
❌ leaves area
❌ refuses to return
❌ waits for human intervention
❌ acts like his life insurance needs updating

Meanwhile Holly would simply eat it and move on.

Please tell me my dog isn’t the only one with completely irrational fears 😂👇

We'd been waiting 85 days for this....... ❤️

On 7th March, Holly broke her leg.

Today........... was the first time she'd been off lead since.

To be honest, I don't think anyone except fellow dog owners will understand quite how much this moment meant.

It's been six weeks since her humongous "pot like" bandage came off.

Six weeks of gradually increasing exercise.

Six weeks of watching every step she took.

Six weeks of wondering if she'd stay sound.

Every walk a little longer than the last.

Every day looking for the slightest sign of lameness.

Thankfully, there hasn't been any.

So today we finally did something we've been building towards for weeks...

We let her off lead in the field.

Not to run wild or to charge around like a lunatic.

Just to be a dog again.

We've been practising recall in the garden and I honestly had no idea what would happen once she had the freedom of the field in front of her.

Would she listen?

Would she disappear into the trees?

Would all that training go out of the window?

““Don’t worry… he’s friendly.”

Those five words can mean completely different things depending on which end of the lead you’re standing can't they.........👀🐾

Earlier this week I was out walking Holly on a local public footpath.

She’s recently had her Robert Jones bandage removed 6 weeks after breaking her leg, so over the last few weeks we’ve been slowly and carefully building her exercise back up again. It has been a long and careful road to get her leg back to full strength.

It was a beautiful peaceful walk… until suddenly a large off-lead dog came charging round a bend completely out of sight of its owner.

Before I could even react, it had Holly by the throat and flipped her onto her back.

Thankfully Holly although startled at the time seems absolutely fine physically, but it really shook me up!

A few moments later the owner appeared with those words:
“Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”

And well, maybe normally he is....

But the reality is:
🐾 not every dog wants another dog charging at them
🐾 not every dog is confident
🐾 not every dog is physically able to cope with rough interactions
🐾 and not every owner can “just relax” when they’re trying to protect a dog recovering from injury, trauma or fear

This isn’t a post about blame or naming and shaming.

It’s just a reminder that good recall and manners genuinely matters.
Especially around blind bends and in shared public spaces.

One of the reasons Tails in the Trees means so much to so many people is because for an hour… people can finally unclench a little.

No surprise encounters.
No dogs appearing out of nowhere.
No anxious scanning of the horizon.

Just space to breathe 🌲🐾❤️
