Well, Holly and I have only gone and done it!! ❤️

Today we completed our **Canicross Couch to 5km course** with the fabulous Fizz Felicity O'Neill

And according to my watch, we actually covered **6.3km!!** Not that I'm showing off or anything! 😂

What an absolutely brilliant experience & lots of laughs. We've had a blast and loved every single minute of it.

We've met such a fab group of people and their gorgeous dogs along the way. Everyone has been so friendly, welcoming and encouraging, which makes such a difference when you're trying something new.

A HUGE thank you to Fizz for all her enthusiasm, patience and encouragement. You've made the whole experience so much fun! 🥰

And if you're reading this thinking, *"I've always fancied trying Canicross, but I'm not sure it's for me..."*

**DO IT!!**

You don't have to be a runner. That's the whole point of starting with Couch to 5km. We all have to start somewhere!

Holly and I would highly recommend giving it a go. 🐾❤️

🐾 The tennis ball has disappeared. Your dog is frantically pawing at its mouth, gagging and struggling to breathe. WHAT DO YOU DO?..............

One minute you're happily throwing a ball for your dog.

The next, you're standing there watching helplessly.

Your dog is choking.

For a split second, your mind goes blank. That awful moment of panic when you realise just how serious this is.

Now, that's a pretty frightening thought, isn't it?

But then something kicks in.

You remember what you learnt on your Canine First Aid Course.

You know what to look for, what to do and how to act while getting emergency veterinary help.

Just imagine the relief if you managed to clear that obstruction and your dog started breathing normally again.

Thank goodness you learned the life saving skill on that course!

But canine first aid isn't all about dramatic emergencies.

It's also about those everyday things that can happen to any of our dogs.

A bee or wasp sting, a torn nail, a cut paw, a wound that needs bandaging. Knowing what to do, what NOT to do and when you need the vet.

I learnt some really interesting things about treating stings, as well as how to apply a bandage properly. Things I'd never really given much thought to before.

I've actually done this course with Kerry from Rhodes2Safety K9 1st Aid, and I can honestly say I learnt so much more than I expected.

I've got my certificate, valid for 3 years, and hopefully I'll never need to put some of that knowledge into practice with Sid or Holly!

Our lovely Julie Donald has organised another course with Kerry, right here in Goxhill, and she'd really appreciate our support in filling the remaining places.

An unlocked gate! 😳

We've had a few occasions recently where customers have gone into the field and forgotten to lock the gate behind them. We've even found the key left dangling in the padlock!

Now, we know our gate locking system takes a little getting used to, particularly if it's your first visit. But there's a very good reason we ask everyone to follow the instructions.

SAFETY. ❤️

Some of the dogs who visit Tails in the Trees are nervous, reactive or simply need somewhere they can run without the worry of meeting other dogs.

Their owners book us because they trust that they'll have a private, secure space.

And we take that responsibility very seriously.

So we've enlisted the help of the lovely Kathy Hill at MD Signs, who's produced these two fabulous new instruction boards for us. One explains how to get into the field and the other explains how to secure everything properly.

Complete with photos, arrows and step-by-step instructions. We've tried to make it as easy as possible! 😂

As soon as they arrive, they'll be attached to the gate so you can follow them as you go.

Please remember, the gate must be locked behind you when you enter AND when you leave. And the key must be returned to the key box before you go.

It only takes one person forgetting to put the padlock back on to compromise the security of the field.

We're incredibly proud of the lovely little community we've built here, and keeping Tails safe is something we all have a part to play in.

❤️ Seven months ago, this training exercise ended with Holly breaking her leg…

And if I'm being truthful, I've been a bit nervous about practising it again.

Back in March, Holly and I were practising the stop whistle in our garden. It's such an important safety command to teach a dog, because being able to stop them at a distance could one day save their life.

I'd thrown a ball as her reward, Holly jumped to catch it, landed badly and fractured her leg. 💔

So you can probably understand why I've been a little apprehensive about going back to it!

But that's where the lovely Helen from Guns and Noses comes in.

Last week, she showed us a completely different way of practising, using a dummy and a bucket!

The idea is quite clever really.

Holly watches me put the dummy in the bucket. We then walk back to her place board, to sit and wait, and then I send her out towards it.

She thinks she's going to retrieve it, but the challenge is to stop her on the whistle before she gets there.

She has to sit and wait while I walk past her, collect the dummy from the bucket and give it to her as her reward.

No jumping for a thrown ball, and Holly thinks it's a brilliant game! 😂

We gradually moved the bucket further away, and the next challenge is to remove the bucket altogether.

We've still got plenty of practising to do, but I came away feeling so much more confident.

And Holly? Well, she absolutely loved it!

It's funny how an accident can knock your confidence, even when your dog has made a good recovery.

Having Helen there, showing us another way to achieve exactly the same thing, made all the difference.

🐾 THREE HOURS?! Who on earth books a dog field for THREE HOURS? 😂

Well, Stuart Hopkinson did! And when he told me why, I thought it was such a lovely idea.

Meet **Murphy, Crumbles and Lexi.** ❤️

They're brother and sisters, but they don't live together.

Murphy lives here in Barrow upon Humber, Crumbles lives in Norwich and Lexi lives in Warrington.

A few times a year, their families make the journey to get them all together for a proper family reunion. 🐾

And they've got their reunions down to a fine art!

An hour of running around together, followed by coffee and cakes for the humans while the dogs have a rest, then another good run around before everyone heads home.

Apparently, they've visited NINE different secure dog fields over the years for these get-togethers!

This October it was our turn at Tails in the Trees, and Stuart booked the field for a whole THREE HOURS.

Looking at these lovely photos, I think it's fair to say they had a wonderful afternoon. And they even managed a family photo in our selfie frame! 😂

🐾 I'm beginning to wonder if Gemma took the right dogs out… 😂

On Friday, Andy and I had a lovely day off to celebrate our friends' wedding, which meant finding someone we could trust to look after Sid and Holly.

And that's where the lovely Gemma McQuillan from Country Canines Dog Walking & Pet Sitting comes in.

I actually met Gemma quite by chance one day when she was walking a little sausage dog along the path past Tails in the Trees.

We stopped for a chat and I realised she was the lady I'd seen posting on Facebook about her dog walking business and her own beautiful dogs.

Not long afterwards, she brought one of her customers' dogs to Tails, and I asked whether she'd ever be able to help us out with Sid and Holly.

So Gemma came over to meet them both, and we had a walk around the field together.

You know how sometimes you meet someone and you can just tell they understand your dogs? Not just that they love dogs in general, but that they really "get" them?

Well, that's how I felt about Gemma.

So on Friday, while we were off enjoying ourselves, Gemma came and took Sid and Holly for a good blast around the Christmas trees.

She sent us these lovely photos afterwards and told me they'd both been really well behaved and were an absolute pleasure to take out.

REALLY? SID AND HOLLY? BOTH OF THEM? 😂

She even managed to get them sitting beautifully for photographs!

Clearly I've been doing something wrong all these years. 🤣

Seriously though, it's such a relief knowing you've found someone you can trust with your dogs. Especially when they're such a big part of your family.

So a huge thank you to Gemma McQuillan at Country Canines Dog Walking & Pet Sitting for looking after our two. We really appreciated it. ❤️
