Along with hens and cats, I have at least three nests of hedgehogs in my garden.

Some don't stay in the garden lol!

"Hens for Hire" - schools hatching eggs, now its spread to doing it in peoples homes.
You hire the incubator and they give you some fertile eggs. Then your kids learn some biology and get cute chicks. Then you can give them back or keep them.
If you give them back, what happens to the boys? The males?
If you keep them you then have to find a few hundred quid to buy a coop, feed bins, etc etc etc and wonder what you will do when you go on holiday.
Result? Lots of hens needing proper homes. And for cockerels its even worse.
They get dumped in fields, forests or anywhere where they will probably slowly die of hunger as they are from domesticated stock.
This has to stop.
My generation managed to learn biology from books and we did OK. What is this theatre of animal cruelty about? Its cheap learning at the expense of real live sentient animals.
I got three 10 week old hens in this week from one of these schemes. They are babies! I have no idea how to look after unwanted 10 week old chicks. I am learning fast obviously but I have only ever rescued knackered out 18 month old ex battery/caged hens or other mature hens before.
I've set up a "nursery" area for them in my huge hen area, because I have the space and resources to do it. Hens can be agressive and they have their pecking order. These youngsters are too tiny to deal with that.

Twelve new ex caged hens arrived yesterday courtesy of Amanda of Fresh Start for Hens.
Plus three ten week old henlets from some good folk in Lincoln.
