Some top tips for the hot weather π
With rising temperatures, it's vital to keep horses comfortable and safe, and making any necessary changes when it comes to managing your yard during hot spells. Here are some essential tips for yard owners and managers to beat the heat:
πΏ Turnout Planning
β Consider changing your turnout routine to provide early morning or overnight turnout to avoid peak heat, and provide ample shade or access to field shelters.
π§ Hydration is Key
β Ensure all horses have constant access to clean, cool water, both in the fields and stables
π Plan & Communicate
β Post daily heat alerts or updates on the yard noticeboard or group chats.
β Encourage clients to reschedule if temperatures soar.
π¬οΈ Cool Stabling
β Keep stables well ventilated with open windows or fans.
𧴠Sun Safety
β Apply sun cream to pink noses and sensitive areas.
πͺ° Fly Control
β Increase fly control protocols: sprays, fly rugs, traps, and fans in stables to keep flies at bay.
π Limit Workload
β Avoid intense work during the middle of the day. Ride early or late, and watch for signs of heat stress: lethargy, heavy sweating, or elevated breathing.
