Exmoor Zoo Exmoor zoo only exists for the animals. Exmoor Zoo began back in 1993 with 2 staff and 10,000 visitors and has consistently grown every year since.

The development of the zoo over time and the commitment of staff and volunteers has meant the zoo has progressed from a small farm holding of 2 Devon fields in 1982 to one of North Devon's major attractions Trees and shrubs growing today were planted back in 1994 and 95, using the central naturally fed spring lake as a focal point. Today 45,000+ people visit us annually.

Due to an unexpected cancellation for Thursday the 15th we have availability to do do a Walk on the wild side, Keeper for a day, Carnivore experience, dingo, shoebill, tapir, lemur or red panda.

So Abou is an inquisitive bird but this time of year she is feeling broody and attempting to make a nest. But Shoebills are solitary in the wild so she would only appreciate a male for a few months of the year to breed and help raise a young chick.

The breeding programme for Shoebills though is very closely monitored and in Europe there are only 4 boys! And one is her brother, so for now she is just being a teenager, sleeping in late, investigating and helping out on her terms. So for us we’re loving taking care of her💚

Help comes in unexpected ways and this did put a smile on our faces.

We started gardening in Abou’s enclosure and she decided it was rather interesting and investigated. It does mean we have multiple films of her interacting to show you over the next few days😇

🕵️‍♂️👀Did you find them all? 🕵️👀

Our night herons do like to keep us on our toes and this year our group bred us another 6 so we had 12 to find all summer! The juveniles now though will soon be departing after all undergoing health checks by our team and vet🐣
